Removing valve body - A518

OK, I've got all of the valve body to trans bolts removed, and the levers removed from the shifter post. Why will the valve body not come out? I'm running out of day and I need to get this done soon. Help!!

Sounds like your doing the right thing. They are more then the 3 or 4 bolts that hold the valve body on. Thoes 3 or 4 hold on the filter but also go through the VBody. Once the filter is removed, look at the valve body for more bolts. There should be about 7 bolts holding the VBody on. I cant remember it been a while since ive done one. Hope this will help get u going. Oh make sure when u put it back together it goes back the way it came apart.

Yeah, I had all of the valve body bolts (approx. 10) and the 3 filter bolts out and it wouldn't come out. Looks like something holding it above the overdrive piston, but can't figure out what. I just put it back together and I'll try again next weekend.

You are correct, there are 10. Did you loosen and remove to two levers on the drivers side of the trans along with removing the plug from the connector above and behind the levers. Also the part that your thinking is the OD piston is where the park rod goes up through.

No, I didn't remove the connector - I looked at it but figured it didn't have anything to do with the valve body coming out. Also, should the selector be in a certain gear to remove the park rod? The levers were removed.

Just unplug the connector, there are 2 orings on the part on the valvebody that seal in the trans case and lets just say it could be a little tight after all these years.

The valve body will come out with the park rod, but I don't know how difficult it is to get back in. I took the e-clip off and left it the trans. Hooked it back up when I put the new valvebody in. I did it on a bench so it wasn't too bad, under the truck could get interesting with gavity at work.

Thanks JD. I'll give it another shot on the weekend and see if I can get it to release.

If you have trouble getting the rod in and out, leave the rearend jacked up so you can have a helper slowly rotate the tires and it will slide right in and out!
