Are you highlighting the end of the shaft that the turbine sits on?

They do that for balancing purposes.

I had my turbo off today, and it had the same type of imperfection. I'll go for the balancing answer since it seem's to be on so many turbo's.

well guys i just put another 100 miles on the truck and it ran flawless. i am beginning to think the noise had something to do with the ipod modulator or it was all in my head. (i have been having back problems and i was heavy on medication both times i heard it.)

Thanks everyone for their responses.

yep they balance the shaft and wheels inside the turbo. That is what the piece missing is from. It was all in your head..
