Power steering pump replacement prob.....

Hi there, I decided to replace my power steering pump on my 2002 dodge 2500 diesel, I picked up the new one, slid it in place ensuring the shaft is slid in the right way, by hand lined up fine, filled it up , run it... no power steering, took it off , done this 3 times, put it back on , every time, no power steering, am I missing something here? all the lines are on properly, the shaft slides in place easily, new fluid, still... doesn't work, I can't see the new pump being shot, it has to be me, what about the valve that the threaded pressure hose goes into, should I change that off my old one to the new one?? not sure... can't seem to get it to work, hoping for a suggestion.... thanks.....!

It is possible that it is an air-locked pump. When I replaced my steering box my pump dumped its fluid on the ground and wouldn't give me any power steering when I refilled it. I took it for a drive, then let it sit for a couple hours trying to figure it out, and when I came back it had finally taken the fluid.

When you fill it, is it using any fluid or is the level staying the same? If it is staying the same, and you drained the lines out my bet is on an air pocket.

power steering

thanks, the level seems to stay the same, doesn't change, is there any way to bleed these? or do you have to armstrong steer it out? I think today , I'll jack it up and see If I can get the wheels to turn at all, if not, I guess I take it out for the 4 th time but I would really like to avoid that. especially since it snowed here a bit last night....

get the front end up in the air and move wheels manually, then move to steering wheel.

yes jack the front end up and move the wheels all the way back and forth shut truck off and check the fluid. mine foamed like a sob when i first did it. i let it settle filled it up ran the truck and kept doing the same thing until it didnt foam.
Now there is a possibility that you could have destroyed the new pump if debris and such was still in the lines. but it is unlikely hopefully this will help

Why did the pump go out the first time?

oh by the way do these trucks have the hydroboost set up or a vaccumm pump to run the pump? if it is the hydroboost push your brake pedal down as the brakes are run off of the ps pump too that might help

Thanks everyone for your help, I finally got it today,!!! after RE an Re 5 times, seems there was lots of air in the systerm, so I loosened it off at the brake assist point, cranked her up and blew oil and air all over, tightened it back up and that solved the problems.... so all that work for a **** air bubble......... thank again for all your information!!!!!!!!!
