Power Loss, won't rev - Pls HELP!

- a friend of mine has an '01 HO / manual tranny which starts up fine, but will not rev at ALL above 1800-ish RPM, no matter how much throttle he gives it. He says it's giving him a LOT of BLUE smoke when he tries to raise the RPM's. This goes on for many minutes, when it will suddenly "catch" and rev just fine.

Any ideas about this? I told him to pull the IAT sensor and see if it's fouled, and swap in a new fuel filter; He already pulled / cleaned / oiled the K&N air filter he's running....I don't think he's trying to rev it when it's cold, but....

This apparently started after he filled up at a local Chevron - I (jokingly!) asked him if he filled up with gas (which would disable the engine entirely, I believe?)

I am not sure if the '01 will post the codes with the three-turns-of-the-key trick - will it? If so, I'll let you guys know if any codes are showing.

His truck is staying parked - a BAD situation for him - until we can get this solved - please help!

Thx / Rauschbo

Depends on how much Diesel was still in the tank when he poured the gas in.

Or, the in ground tank could have been topped off with unleaded by a unattentative tanker driver.

If it started right after he filled up, that could very well be the case.

Easy way to tell is give the tank contents a sniff, any gasoline will be easily sniffable.

Well, we're pretty sure it's not gas, and the air filter was cleaned - he also checked to see if the turbo was "sucking", and it appears to be fine.

Anything else to check before he spends $?

Dead lift pump, plugged fuel filter, or bad injection pump...

Thx for the replies -

- if it is the LP or IP, why does it run fine after a while?

I'm slated to go help him troubleshoot, we'll start by again checking the K&N airfilter, the fuel filter, clean the IAT, check the MAPP sensor, check the PCM connection (seems his AC is acting up now, too), TPS.......if we're still seeing the issue, I'll give a shout -

- thx again, and if anything else occurs to anyone, I'm all ears!

P.S. - Merrick, you still in business with the partnership you had going about a year ago?

Sure am!

I'm not sure why IP's do that, but I've seen it on my own truck.

Is the truck ever difficult to start ?
