Please help speedo and Tach problem!
Please help speedo and Tach problem!
Ok guys got another problem….When not under acceleration my speedo and Tac instantly go to 0 and will bounce there while check engine, gen, wait to start, water in fuel and that little green light that indicates cruise control on the steering wheel all flash really fast. Then when I hit the go pedal again everything stops and acts fine all other gauges are working correctly. Also the A/C hasn’t been cooling off I noticed??? Any help is very much appreciated and very much needed. The truck has no apparent loss of power and everything else seems to be functioning normally!
Thanks
Ian

I'm on the same horse my friend. My tach every couple of days or so drops to 0 then bounces around some. The beauty of owning a Dodge though. They never did have great electronics. I traced mine down to a loose connection some where. I can rock my truck and the tach will start to work after going to 0. Most of the time it works though. I'm guess your problem is closing related. I haven't gotten any further than the basic problem either though.
It's my pot and I'll stir it if I want to. If you're not careful, I'll stir your's as well!

Two initial thoughts come to mind. A bad ground somewhere or an intermittant supply of 12 volts. Have you checked for a dirty or loose fuse? Unfortunately I do not know your model so can only give a very general answer.

I have a 1997 2500 4x4 5 speed also one of my batteries is the original could it be going out and causing this problem????
Thanks
-Ian
Re:Please help speedo and Tach problem!
I don't know which connection it is, but as far as the air conditioner not working, I had that problem. Just a quick question: is your horn working? If not, it's a fuse. It seems the horn and air conditioner are on the same fuse. I figured this one out after a TON of troubleshooting around the AC.
(I only know that this applies to a 97.)
Re:Please help speedo and Tach problem!
Ok guys also i have noticed that unless under fairly heavy acceleration my voltmetere drops to 12ish as well!!!! Would this more than likely be the batteries or the alternator (one of my batteries is stock!)
Re:Please help speedo and Tach problem!
Ok Fellas i got to cleaning connections and tightening grounds charging batteries and cleaned the rear end speed sensor. And got nothing! Still having the problems.....until...i left the truck running and got out to shut the hood and put the fuse panel lid under the hood back on, when i opened teh door to get in for the first time i noticed my tach was working!!! so i hopped in and as soon as my **** hit the seat everything went crazy again so i got back out and sure enough it worked!! got in it quit turns out as soon as i put weight in the cab it goes all screwy..... Are there any grounds i should look for under the cab????
