at times while driving the oil pressure gauge falls to zero,check engine light comes on and then returns to normal with noother problems

 

Oil pressure sending unit is probably bad. Get a new one at the parts store then find it on the truck.

Well that was the first thing I did, I actually check it every time I drive it. The check engine light will come on when I'm driving down the road and the "oil pressure" guage drops to 0 for a few miles then goes back to normal. No ping, cracks, pops, nothing, no other mysterious sounds.

 

Check the sender...buy aftermarket..MUCH cheaper.You can get to it through the drivers wheelwell

 

Very common problem....like the others said, just replace the sender.

If you want to confirm, get a 1/8" NPT (0-100 psi) pressure guage from the parts store, take the 1/8" plug out of the housing that the oil filter screws onto and install the pressure guage there. Then start the truck.

 

Doesn;t say what year truck, but where can you find one aftermarket for a 2001. What i understand cummins does not sell one for a 2001 dodge anymore and the dealer is over 200.
