Oil Pan Nightmare!
Oil Pan Nightmare!
I just bought an oil pan gasket from the local Cummins guys, and the 3 shop guys there all SWORE that I CANNOT pull the pan off without taking the engine completely out!
Any advice / hints / tip will be appreciated, I have a lift coming over tomorrow morning (Chiltons indicates that a slight lift is all that is required...?) and would like to wrap it all up before noon!

I don't know what year your truck is but I replaced the oilpan gasket on my 92 and I used a floor jack and just raised the engine about 3 inches or so. I had no problems but I do recommend that you use some gasket sealer and glue your gasket onto your pan first because it's a little tricky geting it lined up.
It can be done. Make sure you remove the fan first or you will break the fan shrowd as you do have to get the engine quite high. I've done it on a hoist at work and had a few extra supports for safety sake. I wouldn't try this in the driveway personally. If all you are doing is putting a gasket in you can weasle it in there without fully removing the pan.
....yep, stuck with a Driveway Job; I've a 2K1 PT Cruiser, a '74 Bronco and an '82 (6.2L, Banks Sidewinder!!) Jimmy taking up the work space in the garage
I'll yank the fan, no prob -
How about the intercooler hoses or anything else that may hang up? Transmission cooling lines, wiring, transmission supports....?
I should be able to drop the pan enough to get a big rag into it and wipe out the BIG chunks, then snake the new gasket around the pickup tube and reinstall everything without TOO much agony.
While I have the engine in that position, anything else I should be doing / swapping out?
- BTW, thanks for the quick replies! This site has been a WEALTH of tips / tricks / fixes for me -
Thanks again -

you Have to loosen your mounts ,LIFT th eng up Like with a eng crane works best (as it is all out of you way on the bootom) I know this works.......you might have to jack the truck up a liitle tooo to get the front axle away from the frame where aplcable.

done it many times while doing a kdp fix , you can raise the engine after taking the hoses and motor mount out and raise the engine , the pan will drop enough to reach in and remove the oil pick up tube with 10 mm wrench and leave it in the pan , and the pan will come out to clean the block rail and pan , go back in the same way , be sure to use a good silicone on the oil pan rail on the block where the front gear housing mates and the rear main seal housing mates ,
-delayed!
Got a good look at everything and found that the front seal was leaking worse than the pan (a few weeks back I killed the KDP, and while installing the new seal, the Super Starter Tool that Cummins provided RIPPED the seal - so I reinstalled the OLD seal, which began leaking shortly thereafter).....
It looks like most of the leaking may be down around the pan bolts - so for a temp fix, I might pull a couple of the "Worse" offenders, clean 'em up, and reinstall with some RTV? Anybody ever try this?
Thx for the help guys - I'll be accessing these posts if the Bolt/RTV fix doesn't keep my driveway from looking like the Exxon Valdez has been parking there!
