Exclamation NO or very low oil pressure on 01, and codes

Driving my 01 this morning and the check engine light comes on followed shortly thereafter by the check guages light, the oil pressure guage was fluctuating from 0 to normal then it went down to zero and stayed there, this all happened within about a mile and a half. I shut it down as soon as I could get pulled off of the road. Oil level is normal and it sounded and ran like normal. It's not like the gauge just quit working, the needle comes up to zero when you turn the ignition on. It's just sitting in a field drive off the highway so I can't really do anything to it where it sits. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Codes: 1694
1693

If it was mine I would check the sending unit. I believe and (I am sure someone else will speak up shortly ) that the sending unit controls both the light and the gauge.

Start out by tapping on the sending unit to see if that make any difference.

The original sending units on the Dodge 360's had the same problem. If you tap on them they would work for awhile then the light would come on again.

Good Luck

Likely the sending unit as allready mentioned.

I've had them fail on 5.9's in other applications.

However it's always a little risky unning it in case it's NOT the sending unit!

Dollars to donuts, if you change the sender it will function again normally.

It's an electrical gauge. If you have a mechanical one laying around hook it up for confirmation.

It's the sending unit. I checked pressure at the filter and it's good and no loose wires. Right after I posted this I remembered reading a tech article somewhere about them being a common problem. I could've saved myself a lot of panic if I thought of that first. Thanks for the quick replys fellas, good to know there's people to help when you need it.

My 99 started the same problem last fall. I added a mechanical gage and the oil pressure is normal. It's quite a long run to the gage however and in the winter the gage takes a long time to come up. It would probably be best to use a #3 or #4 AN line. You can get them from Speedway Motors pretty cheap. Also the stock gage seemes to come up after the motor is warmed up ...usually about 10-15 minutes.

I think the electric sending units are around $175 -$200.
