No fuel
I just checked the codes and this is what I got:
P PCU, P 1693, P Done, P ECU, P0230, P Done
How can I tell what this means? I'm assuming that these refer to 2 system checks, PCU and ECU and that the 2nd numbers in each set is the code and then the Done indicates the check end. Any help would be appreciated.

No it's not, it's just the code that tells you theres more codes (pcu detected code in ecm) 0230 lift pump circuit out of range. So it might be the lp the wiring or a bad ecm (not likely on the ecm) try running a hot wire to the lp and see if it will pump, AND you need a onboard fuel pressure gauge
Checking the lift pump is my next task. I can hear it running after I bump start the engine but I've been told that that does not indicate that the pump is working. Obviously the pump is getting power since I hear something but I will still check the voltage to the pump. I pulled the fuel line that connects the pump to the filter housing to see if I was getting any fuel through the pump but I got nothing. My question is this: if the pump IS working is there any reason (air, etc...) that would prohibit it from pumping fuel if the line is not connected to the rest of the system?
your fuel pump is going out...normal on the 24 valves...the only lubrication the pump gets is from fuel...when u get a new one...hook up a gauge, think about gettign an FASS, and start using fuel conditioners on a regular...maybe if u dump a few bottles of a good diesel treatment in there u may see some improvement in ur pump performance
I ordered a new pump today, should be in tomorrow. I will definitely put a pressure gauge in. Any recommendations on a supplier. I've read a number of threads talking about FASS. I don't mean to sound ignorant but what is a FASS system and what is/are the benefits?
Also, a friend of mine who has had a number of diesels in the past suggested that there may be a vacuum lock between the lift pump and the injector pump due to the air in the system from changing the filter and that feeding some diesel directly into the intake will start the engine and should help the lift pump to pull fuel and push the air out of the system. I'm going to replace the pump anyway, but just in case it still does not start, is there any credence to his theory or any harm in doing what he suggests? And thanks again to everyone for their help, I really appreciate it.

Heres the codes. http://www.troublecodes.net/chrysler/96-01.shtml
Don't dump fuel into the intake, the grid heaters will light it, and it will burn in the intake manifold. Completely useless.
We're all assuming you have fuel in the tank, do you?
It is likely the lift pump, as everyone says, but you could add an electric pump to help it. Much cheaper than FASS.

Thanks for the code info. Sounds like it probably is the pump. Good to check but yes the tank definitely has plenty of fuel, I never let it get much past 1/4 full. I ordered a stock pump but I know there are also aftermarket performance pumps. Is the stock pump strong enough or should I replace with a stronger pump or an additional in-line pump?
Also, what other gauges should I have (keeping in mind that my engine is stock) besides fuel pressure? pyrometer, boost, trans temp (I don't tow much either) ?,

I always like to run an oil pressure gauge so I don't have to trust the stock idiot gauge, and I like to monitor the oil temperature in the turbo to help with safe cooldown/shutdown practices. If you've got the room in your cab & your wallet, a water temp gauge is great for the same reason.
Replaced the lift pump this morning and after bleeding the system at the filter and injector pump it finally started after a few bump starts!! It's runnin great with no misses, so the initial problem and the start problem was the pump after all. Thanks to everyone who gave their input. I will definitely put a fuel pressure gauge in and possibly a pyrometer. Thanks again for all your help!!!
