Need help bleeding fuel system!
Hey everybody, I have a question. I let somebody borrow my truck a while back and when I got it, the fuel gauge said 1/4 tank. Before I could make it to the gas station, it ran out. Now sometimes it takes FOREVER to start. It used to start as soon as you hit the key. I tried to bleed the injectors with the truck running, but I can't get to the one right there at the intake. Is there another way to bleed them, bc I don't know alot about diesels, and is there a tool I can use to get that injector. It has a banks high ram on it and it is in the way. Do I need to bleed something else??? Please help!
If it's running it should have pushed all the air through right? Maybe you sucked some trash up into something when it ran out.
I'm sure you've done this but have you changed the fuel filter yet? Or drained it?

are you saying the truck starts and runs? If it does it will bleed itself. The hard starting is was probably be caused by somthing else. bad lift pump, plugged fuel filter. low batteries, just things to check before getting into the difficult stuff. water in fuel(drain fuel can). could they have put gas instead of diesel in it? At 1/4 tank and truck runs out of fuel then pickup tube has a hole in it which was produced by a screw that is sticking out to far. (read that somewhere).
I drained the fuel filter, it has a FASS on it and I haven't found anyone around where I live that sells the replacement filters on it, and I went to Advance Auto and Auto Zone, but they couldn't get me one. I have a Edge Attitude Monitor and the monitor has around 15 psi of fuel pressure. Once it starts up, it runs like a champ. I havent bleed that injector that is there at the intake, could that make a difference?

Sounds like you are losing prime, air is getting in the system as the truck sits. Once started it bleeds itself out and all is well. Is the truck hard to start in the morning but then starts OK for the rest of the day? If so, you are losing prime. As a test, for the first start of the day, push the plunger on the lift pump to manually prime the system. It will take a lot of pushing. If it is easy at first, then gets harder, your are first pushing air, then fuel. You have a air leak somewhere. Since you bled the injectors, I would start there.

Actually it starts better the first time you try to start it, and through out the day it gets a little worse. But its not like that all the time, it just varies. It never did this until it got ran out of fuel that one time. Where is that fuel primer located so I can try that?

You don't have a primer on your truck. Go to User CP and click Edit Signature and fill it out with your truck info so it will show up in your posts.
HF6604 is a Fleetguard filter that will work for the FASS. You can call Cummins Atlantic in Greensboro to see if they have one.

My 99 gets a bit harder to start once the fuel level hit 1/4 tank. Been that way for a long time, even with the FASS. I do notice the FASS seems to lose prime a bit when the fuel level gets that low. I have never looked terribly hard at the stock pickup tube when I was fixing the fuel sender, but it sure isn't puching air through the injector pump as it runs perfectly once it starts.
Oh, and DG01, if it runs it's gonna bleed itself so you don't need to take anything loose. The only time you would have to loosen the injector lines to bleed it would be maybe after changing if the fuel filter, if you have a stock fuel system. With the FASS you don't need to bleed anything. When I change the FASS filter I just cycle.bump the key a couple of times and fire it up.
