Short answer, is yes, you will have to prime your fuel system after the filter change. This is how *I* do this:
1. drain fuel filter canister of fuel using the drain
2. Remove and replace fuel filter
3. close drain lever
4. ensure fuel filter cap is tightened to 25ftlbs
5. bump the starter. Observe lift pump running for about 25 secs. ( If you don't, you may need a new lift pump)
6. Uncap the schrader valve test port. With a small common (size 1) screwdriver, depress the nipple inside the valve and release fuel. You should hear air comming out.
7. repeat steps 5 and 6 until no air is present.
8. Start truck and give it some throttle as soon as it starts. This will finishing priming the system. You don't need to go crazy with the throttle, just keep it about 2000 rps for 10 or 15 seconds and you will be good.
9. do a once over for leaks.

If the above fails, you can crack open the injectors and turn over the starter until fuel is present at each injector, then close the injectors and start. I think my way is easier.

Hope this works for you,

Joe

The way I do it is crack the banjo bolt on the IP, bump the starter. Once there is fuel there, tighten the bolt. Doing it this way, it starts right up, and is smooth. Whatever you do, don't start the truck without getting the air out of the system. Tis a PITA to get the truck going again. I'm pretty sure thats how I killed my starter.

All I've ever done with my stock canister was put in the new filter and then bump the key a couple of times for the fuel to fill the canister. Then start it up. Thats how the manual said to do it and it works fine.
