my truck is making noise

I posted in 12v about this. I wouldn't call it an emergency but I don't want to drive my truck anymore til I have some kind of idea what is making the noise. To me it sounds like a small chain dragging the ground. It is coming from under the truck but I don't thing it is the brakes because I still get the sound when I apply the brakes. It isn't real loud but with the window open you cant miss it HELP!!!!!!

THANKS CRIS

This is hard to do by computer. You may have a carrier bearing going out. This is the center support for the driveshaft.
you could also have a trans bearing going out or a transfer case issue. I guess it could also be the rear diff and/or a wheel bearing.
There, you got some idea's to start with.

Can you hear the sound in all gears and at all speeds? What about reverse?
Try getting up to the speed where you can hear the noise, slip it into neutral and shut the engine off for a few seconds. Have someone in the passenger seat with the window open. See if either of you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
BTW, you probably know this already, but only do this on a straight piece of road because the steering will get really stiff and the brakes may not work properly with the engine shut down.
Let us know what you find.

My good friend in college had a 70 GTO. Cool cars. Next choice is a Coronet or Road Runner.

Now back to your post, a dragging chain sound would be like a gear or bearing that is eating it self apart. I'd pull the rear diff cover for a inspect and fluid change if it hasn't been done recently.

I would jack up both rear wheels as on a lift and run it while listening to the wheels and drive line. Sounds like you probaby have a bearing going out somewhere. Wheel bearings, drive shaft center bearing, or gear unit bearing. Front wheel bearings will usually change pitch as you turn the wheel right or left on the highway. If it does not do that I would guess for a first cause the driveshaft or rear bearing in the axle.

Jack up both sides of the rear axle, block it good, remove the tires from the rear and start the truck. Put it in gear or listen. It is problably not the transmossion as it would not do it in direct, generally. IF it only does it while moving it eliminates the bearings associated with the engine like fan bearing, alternator etc.

I would guess rear axle bearings out as the drivshaft would probably cause a vibration with a dry bearing or show other symptoms. You might also look for a seeping rear axle seal which would start seeping with a bad axle bearing. Generally the rear differantial bearings will cause a sing in the rear before causing the dry bearing sound.

While you have the rear wheels off, pull the rear drums and look to see if you have brake parts floating around in the drum, this can also cause the noise.

If it is that noisey, jack up the front wheel and spin it by hand, it will not be smooth on the bad bearing. Or take it to a truck shop that has spin balance on the truck, have them spin it up, it will be very noticable if bad.

You got it right! I took it to sears were my wife works put it up on their new alighment rack lifted all 4 wheels off the rack ran the truck and found that the carrier bearing for the driveshaft was bad. The 2" ring on the back of the carrier had come loose and was just spining on the back shift. Is the carrier a dealer only item or can most part stores get it.

HAULIN_IN_DIXIE YOU THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!

I replaced my carrier bearing last month. Had to get it from the dealer as Napa couldn't get one in for a week. Napa's price was about $120CAN if I remember. I paid $169CAN from the dealer. Dealer part # is 04773014.
