Mcleod dual disk intall problem

I'm trying to install a McLeod dual disk clutch, all was going well until I tried to re-intall the tranny. Has anyone had a problem with getting the input shaft to slide all the way in? The clutch was set up and tested by Haisley's, along with a fresh pilot bearing. the two disks are lined upl as well, it just won't engage all the way ???. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, andy.<br>

Re:Mcleod dual disk intall problem

Are the splines on the input shaft not going through the discs or is the tip of the shaft not going into the pilot bearing?

from what i can tell, it looks like the tip of the input shaft is going about 1/8 inch into the the pilot bearing. it sure seems like i've got the splines lined up as well, it just won't go the last 3/4 inch.

Try this, loosen the pressure plate enough to move the discs, then move the discs around to make sure that they are centered by feeling around the edges, this will center them in relation to the pilot bearing, I think that may help, let me know if it does, don't forget to re-tighten the pressure plate before you slide the trans in.

I loosened the pressure plate and middle plate as well, re-centered the assembly with a centering tool, and still couldn't get it to work. I thought for sure it that would help too.

Re:Mcleod dual disk intall problem

You don't have a burr on the end of your input shaft do you, some centering tools are slightly smaller in the pilot shaft area, working in a trans shop, I learned not to use them and did them using the method I described, this sometimes causes the problem you are facing, If all else fails, use the trans itself as a centering tool. Loosen pressure plate enough to still hold tension on discs, slide trans in, slide trans out, tighten pressure plate, re-install trans

Also look at your input shaft real close, some times from stress the splines will be twisted a little and like richard said you can have a burr or a wear groove that is catching. If that is the case you will have to put it in gear and rock the out put shaft to get it in.

Some disc alignment tools aren't worth spit, I lined mine up with a tool and had the same problem. I had a friend depress the clutch pedal while the trans was almost in and it slid right up.

Re:Mcleod dual disk intall problem

I got it ;D I took the assembly off of the flywheel and tried to slide the two disks onto the input shaft. The inner disk wouldn't slide on the shaft. It turned out there were small burrs on the inner disk. Once we filed them off, the install went fairly smoothly. So far this clutch is wonderful, absolutely no chatter. Pedal feel is very light and engagement is smooth as a baby's butt. Thanks for all the advise, this site is great ;D ;D
