malfunction indicator light
malfunction indicator light
my malfunction indicator light (the one that looks like an engine), came on today while pulling my horse trailer(5,000lbs). I pulled over and checked my oil and water levels. everything is ok. i restarted the engine several times to see if the light would go out but it remained on. when i got home and unhooked, i unpluged my cool down timmer to see if it would make a difference. some time between pulling and checking fuses the light is off now. i am getting ready to travel 1200 miles with my horses and i wonder if i should be concerned about this? i drove empty down the road and could not get the light to come on. what causes this light to come on? the owners manual say this light monitors emissions. could my edge ez cause this to happen? i've been running the ez for only 1 month now. hopefully this is no big deal, but please tell me your opinions. thank you in advance
Did you check for codes?
On your truck, I'm pretty sure the key on/off/on/off/on works.
Codes will flash in the odometer.
Try this, and post what shows up, if anything.
Have a pad of paper handy to write them down as they flash.

I show the P0234 as:
P0234 Turbo Boost Limit Exceeded
The P1693 is a code in one module telling you there is a code in the other module.
This happens because we have both the Dodge computer and the Cummins computer, and they don't always get along.
The EZ has a built in boost fooler, so you shouldn't get that code if the EZ is working correctly.
You do have all connections on the EZ connected right?
Check the connections for cleanliness, clean as needed and reconnect, especially the one to the MAP (Manifold Ambient Pressure (or Absolute) sensor.
If the check engine light still comes on, you might have either a bad EZ or a bad Map Sensor.
You can rule out the EZ by disconnecting it and running without it to see if the light still comes on.
Edge should be able to fix it, or send you a new one, maybe even for free, or greatly reduced price.
If it does without the EZ in the picture, then you might have a bad MAP sensor.
Easy to change, but not sure if you have to get it from the Dealer, or if you can get it cheaper directly from Cummins.

thanks for your reply. do the other codes (p cpu, p done, p ecu) mean anything or do they just reference where they are coming from? I would really like to take this trip. do you feel it is safe to go if i just remove the edge? buy the way the edge i purchased was used and i did notice some corosion on one of the connectors
Yes, those are telling you which module the code is coming from.
I'd bet that connecter is the problem.
Connector probably doesn't seal as good as it used to, and some stray water got in there and corroded it.
Spray it with some kind of contact cleaner,
get some dialectric grease (available at most home improvement, auto parts, or electronics stores)
to keep future moisure out, and I'd bet you'd be fine.

made the trip. the truck ran great(first time with camper and trailer with the edge ez). i was glad to see that my egt's ran cooler than expected. averaging 1050 egrees. i did manage to set off the engine malfunction light again. i was pulling a grade hard and had about 29 lbs of boost. i got the same codes as before 1693, 0234, but this time i also got oo71. does anyone know what this one is ?
