Lower bracket 4 vp44 is bent..
Lower bracket 4 vp44 is bent..
I'm an idiot. I forgot to remove the lover bracket while removing my vp. Even dumber, I used an air ratchet on the puller to speed things up a bit
. I held on to my pump and ran the ratchet. Aftr about an inch of clearance and no fuel pump drop, I realized it was catching on something. So I pulled the bracket out and it is bent. I think I can have it staightened at work, the problem is the power steering pump mount is bent at the top as well.
Questions:
1. Will it hurt to mount the new vp with just the 4 studs and nuts or do i need that rear bracket?
2. Does anyone have a bracket assy hanging around a shop that they really don't need. I hate to go to a junkyard when its a 110 degrees out here..
3. The timing mark on the gear lines up with the one on the case but the keyway is at the 6 o'clock position. Can I bar the motor around so the keyway is at 12?
UPS is on the way with the new pump!

you dont need the extra vp44 pump bracket, remove it and throw it away. ive swapped about 6 vp44s in the last year, and only 2 trucks had a bracket. all the others didnt have it!
yeah you can turn the engine to have it at 12 o clock, i do that, i would hate to have the key fall out. actually i have the key at about 1 o clock, so i can see it ligning up while installing...
you can either use a 15mm socket on the lower damper of the engine, to turn it clockwise, or use a 7/8 socket on the alternator nut (i believe)

With all due respect to 12valve, the bracket is needed to prevent the high pressure lines from breaking and keeping the new VP44 in one piece. The 4 bolts that hold the pump to the gear case are not enough.
Cummins has redesigned this bracket twice. The latest version is Cummins part # 3938707 and has the description, “Kit, fuel connection” which seems a little odd. The bad news is the only way to replace it is to remove the power steering pump to get access to the 2, T40, torx screws holding the bracket to the engine block. This second revision is a heavy plate that bolts to the bottom of the VP44 and a cast steel piece that mounts to the engine block using the same two torx screws. If the bracket was not needed I would be surprised that Cummins spent the time to redesign it twice.
My VP died after the bracket broke and allowed the pump to vibrate itself to death. The fuel computer located on the top of the VP developed an open circuit that was probably caused by the vibration.
If you do not plan on keeping the truck long, don’t worry about the bracket.

While waiting for UPS all day, I tried backing the power steering pump off so I could get the bracket out (torx screws). I removed the two bolts from the pump adapter and I could move the pump back only about 3/16 - 1/4 inch. I can't for the life of me see why the pump and res. don't come free.
I'll get that bracket out and have it straightened or replaced.

I got that lower bracket out and it's repairable. MODERATOR, can you move this post to 24V eng and drive train? I think there's a lesson to be learned here.
Thanks for all the advice fellas.....
