LOW Fuel Pressure!
LOW Fuel Pressure!
Ok first off, new to the board and unfortunately my first post may be a bad one
Just purchased my truck three weeks ago. 2001 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 Sport w/6 speed. With purchase of truck came an Edge Juice Module uninstalled. Along with help from a friend I installed the Juice module and waited for the Attitude monitor to come in the mail. Got the Attitude installed and immediately the low fuel pressure alert came on showing 2 psi. I had already purchased a new fuel filter so I changed it. Wanting to start fresh I let the drain valve drain ALL the fuel and any contaminants/water out. Installed new filter; bumped the starter a few times to cycle pump and no start. Just about ran the batteries down before pressure on the Attitude showed 5 psi, finally the truck started only to show low pressure allert again. Pressure fell to a constant 2 psi on the Attitude monitor; backed the power level back down to 0 (Stock) just to be safe. Truck seems to run alright but there is absolutely no smoke. I mean if I stomp it while lugging outside of the turbo it still won't smoke. Any ideas?

Any ideas guys? This sound like a lift pump? As long as the truck actually runs the injection pump is functioning right? Is the fuel pressure too low to drive to work or am I in danger of damaging IP? Also I plan on a few other upgrades besides the Edge Juice w/Attitude; I plan on Formula One Mach 1.6s or 2's, have an AEM HD Workhorse Cold Air Kit on the way, and plan on 4" Exhaust. Should the LP be ugraded anyway even if its not shot to support the injectors and Edge?
Hey fiveoh, i just bought a 2001 as well about 5 weeks ago, first thing i did was install gauges and the first problem i had was also the fuel pressure. It must be that time for the lift pump to be going out becuase it was around 5 at idle and 2-3 at wot so i went with the walbro fuel lift pump kit and couldnt be more happy i have a solid 15 psi no matter what and there is no hard start because of the way the system is set up. Hope this helps and get something done fast because its easier to come up with 300 bucks than 1500. Take care
Welcome to DTR.
You might try a mechanical gage just to be sure the reading is correct. If it is, replace the fuel pump ASAP and don't drive it, if that's possible. General opinion is that low fuel pressure will cause the VP to go bad.
Also, please fill in your signature so we'll know a little more about your truck.

Correct.....if you plan on keeping the truck. If not, replace it with stock pump from Cummins.
There are a lot of after market options. Everything from a Holly Blue from NAPA to the higher end, like the FASS and Walbro systems. Check some of the vendors here and you can see the differences and the prices.

Yup, just like crobtex said it replaces the lift pump i doubt yours even works, i know mine didnt even hum like it should and when you would bump the starter still nothing, the walbro kit came with everything to go from the fuel line coming out of the tank and takes it up to a 3/8 line and takes it all the way to the stock fuel filter, which i like its pretty easy on these year trucks to change filters. I've got quite a problem going on with my 2002. Similarly to the OP, I just put a attitude on the truck and the fuel pressure was showing anywhere from 12-15 psi (like I would expect) and then the truck would randomly stop that and go down to 0-2 psi. With 4 weeks still remaining on the cummins warranty, I took it to the dodge dealer. They "diagnosed" the injection pump to be bad, and replaced it with a reman unit under warranty. Within a couple of days, the problem was back. I took the truck back in yesterday explaining what was going on, and they "diagnosed" the problem to be both a bad transfer pump AND the dodge ECM. So, they've got about 4000 in warranty repairs into my truck. Today, I pick it up, drive down the street, and the attitude fuel pressure warning starts going off again. This time, the minimum it went to was 2 psi. This is on level 0 - no extra power added, as the IP wire isn't hooked up yet. The fuel filter was replaced within the last 500 miles with a good one. Tank is half full of fuel. So right now, the only mods done are the Juice module on level zero, without the IP tap, a drop-in air filter, larger tires, a stereo, and the dodge relocated in-tank fuel pump.
With all of these factory parts thrown at it, is it unreasonable to assume that the truck should show proper fuel pressures? I know the sending unit works, as it was tested and a manual gauge was also substituted at one point to verify.

The intank pumps are not building pressure very well as you're now aware. The alternative is a proper pump re-located to the frame rail next to the fuel tank, unfortunately the in tank pump will have to be removed as it's a restriction to a proper pump.
