Low coolant reading on the dash gauge and higher then norm trans temps

Not sure whats going on with the truck. Outside temp today was 70, i drove about an hour and the coolant gauge never went past the half way line mark between 140 and 190. It has always ran at about 190. Second thing is that the trans temps were higher then normal, they ran at 200 degrees for my entire round trip, didnt matter if the converter was locked or if the converter was unlocked. Up untill today, trans temps use to get into the 200 range in stop and go traffic, but as soon as i got moving and the converter locked up, they would drop back down to160~170. I not sure but im thinking that maybe the two are connected somehow? Please help me out, i picked up a new thermostat tonight, maybe the original is bad. Thanks

I had the exact same issue on my 2000. It turned out the coolant thermostat was bad ($142 from the cummins dealer) and I had a bad ground on the tranny gauge. Fixed both and the issues went away.

Well, all the issues I had with that truck went away when I traded it off. The cracked 53 block was the final straw. Boy that truck was a lemon.

Replaced the thermostat, ill take it for a ride in the morning to see if that was the issue. I looked at the wire connected to the tranny temp prob and it was haning on by a few strands of wire, pretty corroded too. Cut the end off and put on a new connector. Hopefully those two things were the problems. If anyone else has any ideas, im open, thanks

The thermostat was bad, the new one is operating normal with normal coolant temp readings on the gauge. Thanks
