Loud banging from front of the engine
I just installed a Fluid dampner and an II modified CP3 in my truck last weekend. The truck ran fine for a few hundred miles until yesterday. I even pulled a few loads with it. Yesterday I pulled into a parking lot and starting hearing what sounded like rod know coming from the front of the motor. It still runs fine and I had to drive it home (about 40 miles), all the fluids look okay and the guages all showed nothing out of the norm but the banging is very loud and it is throwing oil from the front of the motor but I am not sure where. Does anyone have any suggestions what it could be or where to start. Someone at work suggested that I had spun a bearing but if I had I doubt it would have made it 40 miles without locking up. I have towing to do this week and I am on leave and must have the truck up for it. I would appreciate any pointers from anyone giving me any suggestions where to begin to cure the noise. It sounds very much like rod knock. Thanks
Just a quick question? Have you checked the fluid damper? might it be loose or coming loose? Think it requires much torque and maybe you didn't have it seated when you tightened and it is coming loose now. Obviously I don't know but as you just replaced this item guess that is where I'd start looking.

My first thought is the KDP, but has that ever happened on a 2004 model? Next I would guess a bolt has come loose inside the front cover. Clean up the oil and see exactly where the leak is for your next clue.
killer dowel pin, used to line up timing cover on 12v. possible to back out possibly destroying your timing gears. fix is to either dimple hole or install a custom washer over pin.
if I had a loud banging noise coming from front of motor. I'd shutdown immediately! no way I'd drive 40 miles home, unless I was dead certain what's making the racket.

I thought that the dowel pin problem was only on the earlier models not the third generation motors? I took apart the valve cover and looked and listened in there and also took off the serpentine belt and balancer off and tried to find the noise in there and I couldnt. I know it is coming from the front of the motor. It is still running fine just with a loud noise that I didnt have before. All of the fluids look good and none of the guages are showing anything but normal. I am not going to pay a shop to do a tear down to find a noise that isnt causing problems...yet. I have looked at everything I can think of and since the truck drives and runs fine I will just have to roll the dice. I cant afford to have my truck down any longer and if I blow it up then I will have to buy another motor I guess. I am getting nowhere and have too much towing to do to keep the truck down, for something that might not be a problem. Thanks to all that posted and if anyone can think of what it could be or might be please let me know. The noise is not as loud as it was the other day when it first started.
Also do we have timing gears or chains and is there a weak link up front that could break from extra power being added? Thanks again.

if you can't isolate what's causing noise. you need to take to someone that can. an experienced mech may not have to tear motor down to tell you what's going on. they may not charge at all to do an estimate.
VS keep on driving and really hurt something bad.

I had a diesel shop look at it yesterday and even though the noise is still there they said they have heard them much louder than that. It has never sounded like that before for 90K miles. They said they didnt find any reason not to keep driving it. I reall am at a loss on who to take it to. I have work that needs to get done and without a decent shop to take it to close by I will keep driving it until something breaks and then I should be able to find out what it was. It is definitely coming from the front of the motor. Since it is gear driven timing I cant imagine that being the problem otherwise it wouldnt be running like it is.
