Loud Bang
Loud Bang
Need your help out there. I was heading home from work today and just got onto the freeway. The onramp's on an incline and the freeway heads uphill, after getting on I open it up a bit and hit about 65, 26-28lbs boost, EGT is normal a little over 800. All of a sudden I hear a loud metallic bang. My truck loses power and my EGT starts climbing like crazy. So I ease way off and drop it down to about 45-50 with the EGT hovering around 1100. I limp home and shut the truck down. Later I started it again, engine sounds fine at idle, no fluids leaking. I take it for a short spin and the tranny seems to shift just fine. However I find that the EGT climbs faster than normal and there's a loud hissing sound when I accellerate, not the normal turbo whine. It's dark out and I didnt get a chance to check everything, but when I pulled the intake hose off of the turbo there was oil on the vanes and in the intake area. I'm suspecting that the stock turbo ate it but I havent had a chance to pull the exhaust side off yet.
Any ideas? If it is the turbo what am I looking at cost wise to replace it?
BTW I checked and there were no codes.

I doubt your turbo is at broke. Was ther play in the shaft? Try to move it up and down and sisde to side and that will tell you real quick. You more than likely have a boost hose off. follow them from your turbo to intercooler, intercooler to intake/engine and you'll find where all your boost is going. Dont forget to tighten all the other clamps up while your looking. This is a common thing to happen, the clamps will loosen with time and need tightened from every now and then.
Almost sounds like the tube between your turbo & intercooler (or turbo & intake manifold if you don't have an intercooler) blew off. My wife's excursion w/ the 7.3 PowerStroke did this. I was not in the truck when this happened, but she described it exactly as you did. The turbo whistles more, but the engine isn't getting any of the boost, so power goes down & egt's go up. Even if the tube did not blow off, if it ruptured, it woudl have the same effect.
If this is it it will be a simple/cheap fix!

Thanks for the help! I'm a little less apprehensive now. I'll take a look at the hoses later today. Will let you all know how it turns out.
Regarding the oil there's a little on the vanes and around the intake area. Not a lot, more like a thin film.
regarding the play it didnt seem to have much either way, it feels pretty stable.
It's great to know that there's such a wealth of experience and knowledge on this forum.
Sorry for taking so long to post but I'm 5 hrs behind the east coast and 2 hrs behind the west. I'm just having my morning coffee right now.

No Problem - we have all been there. I was apprehensive when the same thing happened to my wife. Got a call & she said "I was going up a big hill, somebody cut me off, so I hit the brakes and then heard a BIG BANG. NO - I DID NOT HIT ANYTHING. Anyway, then the truck engine is begining to smell and is running hot. Oh, I also got no power..."
First thing that crossed my mind is that she lost a connecting rod. Fortunately, PowerStrokes blow their intercooler lines more frequently than The 5.9s do, so I knew about it. Had her check under the hood & sure enough the hose blew off. Talked her through fixing it too! It's amazing how resourceful wives can be if they want to be! I was out of town & would have fixed it, but she would have been without her truck for five days, so she decided that she could do it herself.

Wow thats fantastic that she fixed it herself. If it happened to my wife she'd make sure that i didnt forget that I wasnt there to help or that i didnt do the right maintenance to prevent it in the first place.
Cant win i tell ya. but i love her anyway.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks and that you folks were right on target. The boot clamp leading to the intercooler intake popped off. I put it back on and tightened up all the others.
One question for you all. Do you know of any aftermarket boots that would be better than the stock ones? the ones that are on there now seem a bit flimsy.
Anyway thanks again.
