Lost 5th gear again!!
Lost 5th gear again!! Please Help!!! 3rd time!! now what?
Driving home from work, lost 5th gear again in my 1998.5 dodge diesel. This is the 3rd time. First, time around 80,000. Second time, 135,000, now the 3rd time at 180,000. I just moved to Northern VA, D.C. area and really need the name of a good tranny guy in the area.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know the problems associated with this failure in the transmission. I just need someone up here to fix it again.
I live about 20 minutes from D.C.
Any takers???

Go to a medium duty truck transmission repair facility. Obviously, whoever has been repairing your transmission has not replaced the shaft with the version that is fully splined, or the nut would not fall off again. On one with the miles you have, any of the nut only fixes will fail within a few thousand miles because the edges of the OEM half spline are now worn off and creating a torsion bar that shoves 5th gear like a wedge and blows the nut right off the shaft.
Here is a truck repair facility fairly close to your area: Barr Freightliner, Rr 13, Delmar, MD 21875, (410) 896-3560. They can point you to a good transmission shop that can fix your transmission correctly.
