O.K., THIS IS PROBLY A VERY DUMB ?, BUT CAN THE KDP FALL AT IDLE, BANG AROUND AND THE ENGINE NEVER STALL ? THIS IS WHAT I'M THINKING HAPPEND TO ME. I WAS RIGHT NEXT TO TRAFFIC AT A ATM GETTIN CASH WHEN I HEARD A WHOLE LOT OF BANGING AROUND, BUT THE TRUCK DIDNT SEEM TO STUMBLE OR DROP RPM.....MAY HAVE BEEN THE TRAFFIC AS I CANT FIND ANY CRACKS OR DINGS ON THE COVER. I HAVE FOUND A NEW LEAK RIGHT BEHIND THE H.BALANCER THOUGH.

Thumbs down

Sorry to say, it "sounds like" you just got KDP'd !

The pin gets jammed between the aluminum case and the gears and the case looses. The oil leak pretty much confirms it. The crack occurs under the fan mount and is impossible to see until you start removing stuff. Now the front of the engine has to come off which means the cam has to be removed.

I did mine a month ago and the pin was just about to fall out. Did a friends with 71K on it and the pin was in securely. We of course tabbed it anyway.

Good Luck

Yea, I think the dowel pin got ya. The pin is about 3/8" in diameter and the cam gear to timing cover is about half that. Now the work begins................ KDP INFO

The pin can come out and the truck will run fine but usually will leak oil badly.
The link above from Tom was what you need to do to prevent the pin from falling out.
Here's what you have to do after it falls out

Yea you will need to replace the pin. It holds the timing case in the proper position. If you want to keep driving it PLEASE keep an eye on the oil level otherwise it would get real expensive!!

If the dowel pin did bite, you might even be looking at replacing the cam shaft. It gets real expensive real quick. The only way to know for sure is to start tearing into it.

There's a photo of damage to a work truck in my gallery. It ran fine, except I noted a different, whine like noise, and found the oil leak.

My employer's mechanic was tied up on other priority projects, so they took it to the dealer. I think it was like $1200. I don't believe they replaced the cam. It continued to whine for a few months, and the noise went away...

WELL, YOU GUYS WERE RIGHT. THE KDP MUST HAVE CRACKED THE HOUSING AT THE H.BALANCER ! LAST SUNDAY I CLEANED THE HOUSING TRYING TO FIND ANYTHING BUT NOTHING. TODAY WHILE CHECKING MY OIL, I NOTICED OIL ON THE ALTINATOR AND MORE THAN NORMAL VALVE CLATTER. I'M LEAKING AROUND A HALF QUART A WEEK, SO NOW WHO CAN I ORDER THE PARTS FROM ?? HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE TO FIX, OR WHAT IF I DONT FIX THIS AND JUST KEEP ADDING OIL. THE ONLY HARD PART IS GETTING THAT BALANCER AND FAN OFF.

THANKS TO THIS, I HAVE A '99 AT WORK THAT PROBLY HAS THE SAME.

Hey Infidel, I can't get your link to work. This might just be a temporary server problem but just in case, can you tell me where this sight is located so I can just hunt for it. Thanks
