Issues w/VP44 Replacement - '99
Issues w/VP44 Replacement - '99
Fellas,
I'm putting a rebuilt VP44 (from Bosch) on my '99 CTD truck and I've got a service manual for a '94 (that's just the beginning of my problems). I knew that everything wouldn't be the same such as the fuel shut off solenoid, etc. My problem is that I can't locate a timing pin for TDC so I can pull this blown pump off and replace it. I thought I read a link on here at one time describing how to replace the VP44 on a second generation motor. Since I have a REEAAALLLY slow internet connection because I live in the country and no one thinks we need fast service...can someone direct me to the link so I can get truck back in action? I've got all the injection lines off, front timing plug, extraneaous crap out of the way, and I need to get TDC but no pin exists below the VP44. I do see a line with TDC written above it on the front timing cover...does alignment happen there for a '99?

The mark for TDC is up vertically compression TDC for cyl #1 and down vertically for cyl # 6.
For removing the VP44 take a look at the gear, it's got a slot for the key, turn over engine until keyway is straight up, losen conical fit of IP shaft with puller (nut lose but not removed) take care that the keyway doesn't fall in.
That's assuming you hae removed the support bracket and the 4 bolts holding the IP on already)
You don't have to be afraid of the timing with the VP 44 since it has a keyed shaft, no adjustments necessary or possible.

Thanks Alpine and Shovelhead...I have a new question. Why doesn't my VP44 have a support bracket? I can basically see all the way around the pump and I can see an electric sensor (I assume timing) but no support bracket.
Unless you bought it new maybe someone didn't replace it?
Are you sure there is not a bracket on the old pump?
My original IP didn't have the bracket but when it was replaced the cummins tech put one on. I don't think 98.5 or 99 IP's came with the bracket and there was issues with the housing cracking because mine was. Go to cummins and get the bracket.
