i need more speed
i need more speed
about 6 months ago i bought an 89 dodge 250 ctd non intercooled it only had 69,000 when i bought it. it runs flawless tranny and all real clean truck and i bought it for 2 grand, some paint and new tires and it looks good, but when i first bought it i took it for a test drive and its only a 3 sp auto it went about 65 when it was to the floor, revved way out, now i didnt have a tach at the moment i later bought one of those tiny tachs and when i am full throttle on the highway its between 2400-2600 rpm which i belive is low? i called tiny tach to see if there tach was possible wrong , but he said no way i have it hooked to a fuel injection line like they said, i turned up the ve pump and got about 4 mph ( turned up alittle not to much) i get great fuel mileage but going 65 gets real annoying real quick when i do long drives, i was going to have the rear end gears changed but found that they were 3;07 and couldnt go no lower? help me guys can i put some bigger injectors in it? torque plate? propane injecion? what i considered selling it to buy a new one but dont know she runs like a champ and i dont want to buy something im gonna have to fix , i aslo put bigger tires on and got 1-2 maybe is that tach wrong or what im in tampa florida if anyone is around or knows someone that can help id be greatfull
Re:i need more speed
Turning up the pump could mean different things really,,,
If you want more RPM's outta her then you need to adjust the "high idle" or "governor" screw.
There are a number of adjustments on the VE pump but only one designed to change the high idle or governed speed.
This is located on the side of the pump, just below and slightly to rear of the AFC housing, on the drivers fender side. The firewall side (rear) of the scew has a tamper cap on it, which I threw away once I got it off.
You need to loosen the 2 locknuts (10mm I think) and back the scew out. Try 3 turns and drive it. You should consider no more than 3000 RPM for the upper end. These engines will go higher some run 3200-3400 RPM, and one Wildman has run as high as 3600 RPM but that is well into 'vavle float' range.
Here is a 'link' to a few pics I have posted on the VE pump. You'll find a number of pics there, some show the governor screw, and other pump adjustments.
Remember, if you adjust the governor screw, you need to make sure your high throttle stop touches the screw end when the 'gas' peddle is on the floor.

You mentioned 'adjusting the pump'. What exactly have you changed, how much, and did you mark your "original" positions?

Re:i need more speed
Well, right now, if I lock OD out, I can pull right up to about 125 Kph, by then it's starting to run out of legs and come up against the governor (2950 or so)
Also, I am losing less in the drive line than others due to the tighter TC/VB/Tranny.

Bob.
Re:i need more speed
i found that governor that helped a million, it was stopping it at 2400 i took it to a local diesel place the guy was great and helped me out so now i got about 2900 and 83 mph so im happy as a pig in the mud lol, thanks for the ideas, now i just need more power ar ar ar ar , thinking about a torque plate ? are those hard to install?
Re:i need more speed
Well, glad it helped out....
The "more power" is almost as easy as the governor...
There are 4 basic adjustments that control the overall power, acceleration, smoke etc. on these trucks. They are all accessible right on the pump.
Look again at the pics I directed you to for reference and me or someone will be glad to walk you thru the tweaks. This is something you can do yourself, and it's not hard. The major/cardinal rule is......MARK EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU START !!!!!
Once you have "original" position marks, your good to go...
There isn't anything that you can't undo if you don't like it.
Our VE pump has limitations in terms of how much total fuel it will supply, but you can get a decent amount out of it without real danger.... after a certain point you simply must go to better injectors..
The most popular are the Lucas (aka: POD) injector....BTW, POD= "Prince of Darkness"... trust me, you'll figure that one out soon enough
At a certain point these larger injectors will relieve some of the stress on the injection pump as you uprate the fueling levels.
Well that's a long post so I'll close with this... let us know what you want and we can walk you thru the tweaks on the VE pump. Don't forget, this pump/engine combo really likes the pump timing set at about 15* advance or 1.45mm, depending on method used to set it.
OOps, one last thing... the auto (727) is a good tranny. It's still used in somewhat modified form for racing today.
If you plan to uprate your HP a bit then you should get some service/tweaks done to it.
First, have the pressures checked,.. by that I mean your idle pressure, have it set to max spec (60psi ?) and your WOT pressure set as well, to max spec (104psi?)
What this will do is this.... when you shift from "P" or "N" into "D" or "R" you will have a smooth engagement, no BANG! the WOT pressure will help make sure that when you are going up into high throttle area the bands/clutch packs will be held together as firmly as possible, reducing any slippage.
We can discuss this in more detail later.. right now, enjoy..

Something dont sound right here as all the CTD's came with overdrive trans 5spd or auto with 3.54 or 4.10 gears. Is this a parts and pieces truck and wouldn't it be easier to get a tranny built for it with an overdrive. Never seen a set of gears for Dana/Spicer 70 above 3.42. PK
