High EGT Temp.
High EGT Temp.
I have been noticing lately that my truck has been giving out a little extra black smoke when driving. Just recently I noticed that the EGT gauge that I have is getting hot just during regular driving. I can't get on it without having to back off due to the temp. When I start up the truck it already reads at 400 and if I get on the highway and accelerate it will avg around 900-1000. If you really get on it it will jump up to 1200. Any ideas as to what the problem is? I had the fuel filter, pump changed in the last three months as well as the air filter. It is a 2004 5.9 liter automatic. Any help would be great. I also have noticed a really strong smell in the oil and don't know if that is normal or not. First time owner of a diesel..
See if your exhaust is flowing properly. If a rock came up under your truck or something and pinched it off, or if you maybe clogged your muffler/cat it could be choking it up.
Just an idea, Fred.

Does the oil smell like diesel? Does the oil level read over full? Maybe a bad injector, is there any blue or white smoke on cold start? Does it run rough at idle, have you checked your turbo shaft play? Just thinking out loud.
Do you have a boost gauge? Is it reading correctly? Are you still getting the same boost? Does the boost come on like it is supposed to or is it lagging a little bit. It doesn't sound like a fuel problem. It sounds more like an air problem. So check the boots, air filter, and intercooler. If those are all good, you need to check out the turbo.
By the way, what year truck and what if any mods?

My truck is a 2004 2500. It has the gauges to measure egt, boost, and tranny temp. Don't know if it was chipped prior to me buying it. It has 115000 miles on it. The oil doesn't smell like diesel. The only way to describe the smell is extremely rich almost greasy. I will have to check all of the above comments out to see if any flow is pinched or restricted. I am hoping it is not an injector. It doesn't blow any white or blue smoke, but it has started blowing black smoke on acceleration a lot more than before.
