HELP!!! Problem with ????

I have a problem with my truck. I have a 2001 CTD with an Automatic Trans. It started last Friday towing my travel trailer. Running about 55 MPH and accelerating onto the freeway the engine just nosed over and would go above 1200 RPM no matter how much throttle I gave it. I kicked the OD off and back on and the engine came back to life. It did it numerous times again on Monday, some I could just let off the throttle and and back on again and it would go. Others I would again kick off the OD and turn it back on and it would go. I took off the PowerPuck chip thinking that was it. When I drove the truck this morning still towing with the truck still cold (so its not a temo thing), I pulled away from the Stop sign had barely reached 5 MPH when it did it again. This time I had to stop and shut off the truck and restart it, and it worked fine again. Any suggestions????? Please help. I need ammo when I take it to the dealer.

...the intermittent Dead Pedal is often the sign of the VP giving up the ghost, and it may or may not set a code; I believe the 3-turn trick with the key will pull up the codes on your truck - the one to NOT want is the 0216.....you may try the APPS reset procedure, this MAY clear up the problem, but...there is a LOT of Dead Pedal history on this site that turned out to be the VP44.

....strongly recommend that you gauge up the truck, Fuel pressure (CRITICAL), probably EGT and boost (it sounds like your truck will NOT be remaining stock for long)....

Update

I have taken my truck in to the dealer. Please let me know if this sounds right. They say the Boost pump is bad as well as the injector pump. Which of these is the VP-44???

- sorry to hear your diagnosis, that's the Big One for these 2nd gen's;

What are your plans, have the dealer do the R & R work, or do it yourself? Is it under warranty (THAT would be optimal!)?

Once the rig is back on the road, let me reiterate my original suggestion - get a FP gauge (at least) on the truck! This may let you know when the low-$ LP is about to murder the HIGH-$ VP44....and you may be able to save some serious money.

the dealer will put the lift pump in the tank. Most on here don't like them because their low presure (and expensive). If they do the job for you it will be around $2400 or better. You can do it your self for half that and 3 hours work and have a better setup. JMO
