To find top dead center for this purpose, pull number one plug, put your finger or thumb to block the hole, bump the starter til you get some pressure coming out. Then bring the timing mark on the damper up to the pointer going in the proper direction. Now find the wire that the distributer is pointing to and that is number one. Make sure you are going in the right direction and put the rest of the wires on.

Best to bump the starter to see which direction the damper turns and then look at the roter and bump the starter. Then you will know the right directions for both. Then bring in up to top dead center on the damper. You should be within an inch or two of the pointer. If it is past it, do it again until the mark is not to the pointer yet and then trun it the right direction to the pointer. Make sure to install the wires using the firing order in the direction the roter turns.

Plugged catalytic converter. Has spark, has fuel, exhaust gases are backing up and killing the burn in the cylinder. Just a thought.
