Help Little Brother And Friends!!!!please.

I only got that off a search, but #1 is always at the front of the engine, I believe. So it would be as you face the engine looking under the hood, not sitting in the drivers seat.

The # 1 piston..is it on the left side as you're looking at the front of the motor?

If the plugs were wet when she pulled them then I would say that the motor is getting enough fuel, so don't worry about fuel pump or fuel filter at this time. If it was a fuel pump or a clogged filter then probably the motor would have started missing under load. Although that could also be a sign of ignition problems.
If she has access to a battery charger it may be an idea to put it on while all this is going on as the battery could be getting low with all the cranking.
I would for step #1 make sure all the HT wires are connected in the correct firing order. Then hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it a few times without moving the gas pedal off the floor. If it is flooded this hopefully will clear it. Once it starts then she can ease up on the gfas pedal to avoid over revving the engine.

OK..she is working on the plugs now.I cannot talk to her and you at the same time,so while she is doing that,Im going to keep the line clear so she can call if needed..I'll then post any questions or what its doing from her .In the meantime,I'll check this thread periodically to see if there are any further instructions or suggestions from you.
Poor gal,I sure hope she can do this with our/your help..I know she isnt exactly happy right now out there..and there is not one person withing a 50 mile radius that can even help her!!!!
thankfully you guys are here, even though it IS a Ford..hehe better buy a Dodge next time.dont you agree?

My worry is that if she pulled all the wires out from the distributer cap then how will she know where #1 is to start putting them back? Hopefully she did not pull them all out. Also hopefully on her cap #1 is marked. If it is it will be a 1 near the cap tower. I really do not know that motor so am guessing at this. Keep us posted on the progress.
I may have to go out soon but will stay near the computer as long as I can. My .02 should really help to confuse things. Hey experts, where you are?

glad I took one more peek before I got off..We are in Tn.She is stuck in a tiny town about 80 miles from here..There are no phones,(she has her cell) and sigh there is no one out there that knows anything about engines..She does carry some tools and has managed to get it to a place where she can work on it and get transported to an Auto zone about 40 miles away if needed.I hate to say,but she did take all the wires off at once.A guy who was trying to help out there actually did it.She had marked the wires but somehow the marks got rubbed off.She isnt a mechanic, but has a tiny bit of knowledge about her engine...hopefully just enough ,with your help she can get it running long enough to be able to get it someplace that can work on it.Any last suggestions before I call her back with your latest info and thoughts?

Yikes! All the wires off? Even some seasoned mechanics would have trouble with that. Now we have a whole new ballgame. Did she manage to find any indication of which is #1 on the cap? If not, I do not think with her little knowledge that she can go much further and may have to get it towed.
IF my first post is correct, it says where #1 is in relation to the screws on the cap. Sounds like a tow might be the best option though. I don't like the idea of anyone out in the middle of nowhere by themselves.
I assume we are talking about the V6 ford motor, I think it was the 2.9 liter. If she has cranked the motor, then she'll need to remove the #1 plug, find top dead center, remove the cap, and see where the rotor button is, find the appropriate terminal on the cap, and do the wiring in that order. I have a book SOMEWHERE but don't know where it is. Best way to find top dead center is pull spark plug, put your finger over the hole, have someone BUMP the motor, when it blows your finger away, look at the harmonic balancer, it'll have a line on it, find o* on the front cover, if you go to far or not far enough, roll the belt to line it up, after she wires it up, if it pops and blows back, she's 180* out, move #1 plug wire on the cap 180* and rewire from there, it's simple, IF you know how. And yes it should have a fuel pressure regulator, it'll be on the fuel rail, about the size of a half dollar or silver dollar with a vacuum line on it. if it runs rough when cold, it cold be the cold idle compensator, AKA choke for fuel injection, it's all computer controled. Best suggestion is to get the wires fixed, get it cranked, warm it up and have a shop look at it. I had a 89 ford V6 Ranger that always dealt me fits, until I sold it
Excellent!!! Thank you ..I MEAN it! this is just the advice that we are looking for..she is making headway but havent heard from her in a couple of hours. But the pressure reg..she asked about that and she said to tell you that she is going to do just that..SELL SELL SELL!! I'll be back when I know more...stay tuned. We dont like her being out there either..
F@T, This rig is Electronic Fuel Injected! This maybe why she is getting to much fuel.
EFI- When starting a EFI Eng. you turn the key to the "on" position and the Elec. fuel pump "primes" the system, you then turn the key to start, IF! The eng. doesn't sart *DO NOT TURN THE KEY ALL THE WAY OFF!* Everytime you turn the "key" all the off and back on you will pump fuel into the cyl. and flood the eng.
Make sure she has the wires on correctly and try to start it without turning the key all the wat off, just let it fall back to the "run position" and try to crank again. It will backfire and fart a bit till the fuel is pumped out the exhuast. You could also try this with the pedal to the floor, but don't let up on it till it run's!
I see this alot at work, we have over 350 vehicles with EFI/ throttle body injection and every winter we have to get these things running and "remind" the drivers on how to start them.
Good Luck! Dog

Other simple way to check for No 1 is to remove all plugs, turn engine to the position where you see the 0deg marking on the balancer, look at the distributor finger. Either correct or 180deg off for no1. (Easier than the bump starter method since it can't go too far.
First check is with just number one plug in- if it coughs it's OK if it burps or farts not OK.
Then go after supplied firing order.

Ouch! I still think that it was flooded, but the guy that "helped" her has badly complicated the problem.
I was going to tell you how to let her know how to find #1 by the method that PumpDaddy described but thought that it would be too complicated for her getting it third hand. AlpineRam also has it right. How is she doing with this? After all this time would it not have been quicker to drive out and tow her back?
When she is trying to start it with the air filter hose off warn her to keep her face and hands well away from the intake. If she has the wires connected wrong and it backfires, particularly if it is flooded, she will get badly burned.
