on my way to work this morning my truck started popping louldy. I pulled off to the side and took off the air cleaner box and there are pulses of air coming into the ari box from the turbo. the truck is pouring black smoke due due to lack of air.... what gives?

Too early on a Sunday to get the 12 valver gurus input. I would not drive it until you know what happened.

Have you checked the entire air system for leaks?
Are all the boots on tight? with no holes?
When did you last get fuel?

Sounds like a bent pushrod or broken rocker arm.

last fuel up was last week and im down to about 1/2 tank. also ran the truck yesterday after i canged the gaskets and had no problems. left for work at 430 and about 15 mins into my trip it started. all boots seem to be tight and no detectable air leaks.

an intake valve is not seating for any number of reasons
could be a bent valve, burnt valve, bent push rod, ect....

My 1st thought was a valve issue , where from is the ?
Cam , lifter , push rod , rocker , spring , keepers , valve , seat .
If you have not found the problem then you can not be sure what it is not , its not uncommon to have to check the same thing more than once .
I so not remember having that symptom & not be a valve train issue , but there are very few absolutes .

Why can't it be? Just because something was in one piece yesterday doesn't mean it's not broke today. Take the rocker covers off and have a look, check the pushrods if all the rockers are good. Sometimes the clips that hold the rockers on the shafts break and the rocker slides off.

problem is resolved. when i got out of work i took all the valve covers off and found the #5 exhaust valve pushrod was off the rocker but wedged against it holding the valve open. thankfully it was wedged and didnt just slap around, and caused no further damage. truck is fine drove it home no issues. thanks for the help everyone.
