headlights gone

Both headlights in my 99 2500 4wd died on me at the same time. I have checked every fuse in the truck that I can find, but in a different thread someone was refering to a 40amp fuse for the headlights and I didn't find this one. The only ones I could find were 2 15amp under the hood. they'r both good, tried new bulbs and all the other parking fog and clearance lights are fine. I have had the switch replaced one time before, and it was easy to tell it was bad because you could smell and feel it getting hot. not the case this time. i have not had bright beams on this truck for a year or more now, but prior to this the low beams have never been an issue.

I would bet that it is the multi-function switch, ie turnsignals, high beam, low beam, etc. Try playing with it some and see if it might make a contact. They do go bad.

I've run into some where just the headlights cut out due to a bad switch. With the **** pulled out for lights on try moving the **** side to side to see if it makes them go on. Then you'll know if the switch is indeed the problem. Bought a new one here for $57 just a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah but he has not had high beams for a while now and since that the low beams went out. Headlight switch would not cause the highbeams to go out.

I have wiggled and jiggled everything, but my belly trying to mess with these. I did almost 500miles at night pulling a trailer with a farm tractor loaded behind running with only fog lights. I stopped every so often as i'd get a new idea to try, but they are just dead.

I agree, mine did the same thing. It was the multi function switch.

Do you have a relay in the fuse box under the hood?

The only thing I can find for the headlights is the 2 15amp fuses. there is a spot on the relay board marked quad high beam but there is not one in there and nothing attached to the bottom of the panel to even plug it into, just empty holes. I can't find anything else either in the cab fuse panel or in this relay box under the hood that is marked for headlights.

Here's a wild idea. Connect 12v power to the head lite and trace back with a test light to see where the power is not flowing. I don't have a wireing diagram to trace to see if there is a fuesable link in the system. Maybe some one out there has one????

I am with all those who suggest you check the multi-function switch. Mine is going bad; have had numerous occasions where headlights have gone out when I attempted to switch to high-beams--pretty exciting on the Interstate at 80 mph!. So far a few quick flicks between high and low-beam has brought them back on. Maybe I should take the switch out and clean it?

Oh, I almost forgot--the headlight switch itself went bad just a few weeks after I bought the truck in '99; the fog lights quit working. Dodge ******* told me they'd seen a lot of them go bad. That was more than 4 years ago and I haven't had any trouble with that one again.

I will pull the switch apart and see if I can see any problems, but having said this any special tricks out their for pulling the dash apart without breaking parts and pieces?

The dash bezel just snaps off; really no trick to it. I took my multi-function switch off yesterday and cleaned it up using contact cleaner and compressed air. It seems you can see the contacts pretty well through the back of it. It seems to work better but I'll wait a while before I call it fixed. You'll need anti-tamper torx bits to pull the switch.

Well, I pulled the switch out today, and wether it was or was not bad it is now. When I got it loose from the dash I could hear something rattling around inside of it, So I pried it open a little and a little brass piece fell out, and then a few more along with a spring. So my question now is, is there an aftermarket switch that is better than the OEM? This will be the second with only 110,000 miles on the truck.

When I tried to get an aftermarket one from Napa the number called for delivered the wrong switch, would have required different connectors. The price from http://www.onlinemoparparts.com/moparonline.htm ended up being cheaper anyway.

I finally got a new switch in, but the headlights are still out. I have clearance lights, parking lights, foglight and tail-lights. Everything but headlights.
