hard start when hot.

I have a 1998 dodge with a 5.9 cummins in it .when the engine is cold it starts good .it runs good with no codes .when you shut it off lut it set for a little bit it dont start vary well .after you get it running it runs good.

Commonly, that sounds like a starter or battery problem.

it turns over good. just takes a wile for it to fire .just had a new fuel transfer pump put on a fass pump. has any one had problems with this stile of pump.

Ok, new info.

Hard starting like that could mean a bad injector, or a VP going out. The fuel pumps (VP, high pressure) in these trucks have a high failure rate, especially when they are starved for fuel (lift pump going bad).

Do you have a low pressure fuel gauge?

I just got the truck.i had a fuel pressure gauge ,boost pressure,and prirometor.the fuel transfer pump looked rusty so i had a new transfer put on. it runs around 12 psi.

You've got good low side pressure.

If I remember, I think that a bad injector won't crank when it's cold...

Time to start asking VP questions. I'm not a second gen guy... that's the best I can offer you.

I had the same problem with hot starts. I changed the VP injection pump and it is good now.

The engine acks like it is loosing its prime.Found out there is a check valve in the return line.I am going to try it before I replace the pump.
