Grinding shifting into 4th gear.

I have a '01 with a 6spd with 94,000 on it. When I shift up into 4th gear or down shift into 4th gear, sounds as if I'm grinding the gear. The clutch is depressed all the way to the floor. It doesn't do it all the time. If I take about a 2-3 second delay in my shift while in neutral it doesn't hardly ever do it. Can someone please give me some advice as to the problem. Haven't replaced the clutch yet.

Sounds like your syncro gear is shot. It wont get better until it is replaced. There is nothing you can do but replace it and if you do you might as well change all the syncro gears if nothing else.

I agree... It sounds like the syncro gears are wore out or damaged... Time to replace them.. Might as well just rebuild the tranny and put some bearings and other things in while its out...

Sorry for the misfortune...

Double clutch that gear, it will save on anymore damage. You know from 3rd to neutral, let the clutch out , then 4th.

Just take the time and be careful shifting into that gear, as long as it is not "grinding" it is not doing any more damage than is already there. The more it actually grinds it is do more damage to that synchro ring. My fifth gear does it to, I just granny shift that gear and all is good. Don't have the $$$ for a rebuild right now.

In order to technically fix the problem, everybody is right, the synchro ring needs to be replaced.

Any idea how much it is to replace synchros or just do a rebuild? I've got the small grind happening going into 5th. If I pause, no grind. But you can't slip it right in like I used to.

i shelled out my stop clutches on my sincros and it cost 800 for parts and i did it my self. i dont recommend working on the 6 speed trans. One of my dads buddies (diesel mechanic) helped me a little bit and he swore that if he ever met the guy that designed that trans he was gunna hurt them. and i agree, it was a crazy job. the labor on that would be insanely high.

when mine went out all-of-a-sudden. i didnt have any problems before and i went from 3rd to 4th and BAM it was loud and the locked up the trans and scooted the tires and all kind of crap. i had to back it to the house in reverse (bout 1/2 mile, yeah i got lucky )
