Got my VP44 back rebuilt, have a question b4 install?!?

I sent my VP44 out to be rebuilt and just received it back this week. When I sent it out I pulled the keyway out of the shaft so it would not get lost in shipping. Now I think I am glad I did. When I got the pump back it had a different keyway in the shaft with a different 3 digit code. My keyway has 045 stamped on it and the pump they sent back has a keyway with 035 stamped on it.

Can anyone tell me, which keyway I should use to re-install the pump? I have read on this site that the keyway is involved with timing the pump. So that being said I would think that I would want to put the original keyway back in (045). My concern however is that these keyways are somehow specific to the pump. Is this the case? Which keyway do I use?

Please help, I want to get my truck running again, but I don't want to use the wrong keyway. They told me they were rebuilding my pump, but now I don't know. I should have written down my serial#.

Thanks for your help.

From what I've heard & read, always use the Key that came back with the pump.

Can you call the shop and confirm before the reinstall?

don't know anything about the different keys, but it does surprise me that they would leave the original boilerplate intact after rebuilding a pump.

The number on the key MUST! match the number on the pump. The key is used to time the pump to the crankshaft. If you use a different key the engine will see a timing failure and assume something in your geartrain is wrong and stop working.

not only should the key match the pump , also the direction must be the same direction it came on the pump.

Thank you all for your help!!

So should I assume that the pump they sent is a different one than I sent to them? I was under the impression that they were going to rebuild my pump and send it back. Or do the new parts that they used to rebuild the pump change the keyway number?

Thanks again, I will be putting the pump in tomorrow with the pump and keyway they sent.
