Angry Gauge Power

Its late in the afternoon and I am losing sunlight quickly.

I am installing my aftermarket gauges in the freezing cold. I have already installed the pods, and I have power with dimmer control for the background lights. What I can't not find is where to tap into the power line for the gauges. I only want the gauges on when the truck is running, but apparently Chrysler doesn't provide any type of spares in the fuse block unless I want to put a toggle switch on it and that is something I will not do.

I did a search on past articles, and I came up with a fuse tap. What is that? Apparently noone at O'reilly or Radio Shack had an idea either.

Thanks

One annoyed procrastinator

Fuse taps look like this:

Make sure you put the tap on the fused side, not the hot side of the fuse block.

www.radioshack.com has a fuse tap for the flat blade type fuses:

Maybe your local Radio Shack store will know what they are if you give them their own catalog number: 270-1204 or maybe if you print out and bring in a picture.

Also, what year truck are you working on? I've got a 2004 shop manual and I'd be happy to try and find a wire that is hot when running if you want.

Thank You,

After looking at your pictures, I realized that I should have asked everyone before I opened the dash. About five minutes before Amartinson's reply came in, I found an acceptable wire lead. As I looked at the picture after the completion of today's project, I said "Huh, that would have saved me about 3-4 hours in 30* weather."

Thanks for all the help again.

A much happier procrastinator
