Fuel sender ( whole unit)

??? On the fuel sending unit in the tank I guess it would be the fuel pick up part that looks like it is suppose to slide up an down, with 1 screw on one side an 2 screws on the other, Is this suppose to slide or not we put in a new sending unit an this piece was falling apart, so we put in bigger screws an washers an made them tight, it seems to be working ok. We measured to the bottom of the tank an measured the unit an made them the same distance an tightened it up (actually you could see where it was with the prior screws) an we set it just the same.
Is this how it is from the factory.
Thanks Bob

Re:Fuel sender ( whole unit)

It sounds like you got the right idea.

You unscrew the retainer ring, pull the unit with the sender, pickup, rollover valve, and return lines from the tank, and swap out the old parts.

Do not toss your old sender. Take a good look at the hinge pin on the arm that swings the variable resistor. I expect you will find the aluminum rivit is failing. Take a chunk of aluminum welding rod and make a new pin for your old sender. Tigten up the works and set it aside for when the new one fails in about 40,000 miles. If you use good aluminum rod, the repair will last longer than a new one.

I ususally put a hose on the vent tube on the rollover valve, run it way up behind the cab, or all the way forward and under the hood, and put a filter on the thing to keep out dirt. That way you can run in the mud and not get water in the tank.

You have it right, the tube slides up and down on the original installation. When changing mine I also put larger screws in with washers and locked it up. When allowed to slide it generates alumimum chips in the tank which I would guess hurts the lift pump. Mine has been locked up now for 50,000 miles or better. The ratio of the fuel gage does change with locking it up but you get used to it and actually it is more accurate in repeating itself from tank to tank although half a tank is about 3/4 of an indication of the gage. Another thing that you can do is to knock the top out of the roll over valve and take the regulator out of it leaving only the roll over disc. The tank tends to keep vacuum in it as made stock.
