fuel pump issue

I have a 2001 - Ram 2500. In the last two weeks when you go out in the morning it does not want to start. I just had pressure gauge put on it last week. While it cycles the pressure will go up to maybe 3 and the first couple of times you try to start it it will build the pressure and then drop back down until about the third or fourth try it will hit about 12 and stay there. The pressure stays consistant the whole time you drive the truck and unless it sets for a really long time will start fine the rest of the day. For this reason I really don't think it is the fuel pump. Is there a pressure valve that can be replaced first or do you have to replace the whole pump?

Have you checked your fuel filter out. It may be the culprit.

I would guess if this didn't happen before the fuel pressure gauge you introduced a leak through your gauge somewhere in the fuel line. Check all connections for diesel and tighten accordingly.

It sounds like your flexible fuel lines are old. Replace them if they are over two years old.

What happens is they develop microscopic holes that let air in the system and allow the fuel to leak back to the tank. It takes several attempts at starting to get the air out and the system pressurized. You can test this by just bumping the prime position on your key a couple of times before actually starting. If the fuel pressure rises on the second or third prime, the hoses are bad. There are four hoses to change, two between the frame and the engine and two between the tank and the frame.

Yes, This is why I had the guage installed. I never thought about a leak in the line. Just assumed it would be in the valve. I'll check. THanks, Racheal
