Re:fuel filter

The fuel filter is on the side of the block, near the top of the head, tucked back behind the injection pump. The water separator is the plastic cap that screws on the bottom of the filter.

You have a second water separator located right ahead of the lift pump, and it has a bolt on the bottom that allows it to come apart. Get new gaskets and a new screen from Cummins before you pull it apart. At the age of your truck, it will be overdue for a complete cleaning and screen replacement.

Re:fuel filter

Try Cummins.com and look for a service center located near you. Provide them with the CPL number on the engine plate, located under the injection pump on the side of the front gearcase.

The screen and gaskets for the lower water separator/fuel heater are not included with the primary fuel filter. They need to be ordered separately, just tell the Cummins guy they are for the fuel heater, the price should be around $10 for the screen and a couple bucks for the gaskets. They only need to be changed every five or six years if you run clean fuel and use a good additive once in a while.

The gasket for the main filter and for the plastic water separator attached to the bottom of that will come with that filter as a complete kit.

Re:fuel filter

This is what I use on my 95. Fleetguard FS1232 filter, comes
with an o-ring that goes on the bottom where you unscrew the valve
assembly that lets you drain the water from it, and another rubber
gasket that you have to pry off of the filter head from around the threads
that the filter screws onto. I disconnect the drain tube and the water-in-fuel
sensor wire, then unscrew the filter. I usually slip a zip lock bag up around
the filter so any fuel that is sloshed out doesnt wind up on me. What RCW
is talking about is called the fuel pre-filter assembly, and consists of a
strainer screen, gasket, and pressed steel nut. You will want to get this
from Cummins as part number 3845400-S for $6, not from dodge for $42
I have the pre-filter, but haven't ever changed it, yet, so don't know how
difficult it is.

Hope this helps.
