I was filling my truck up from a jerry can at the cabin because we can't get any good diesel up there. I was filling it using a hand pump. While I was filling my tank the little plastic end of the hand pump fell off and into the filler hose of my truck. Now when I go to the truck stop and try to fill my truck up at the pump, the pump nozzle keeps shuting off because the diesel backs up in the filler hose like it normaly does when the tank is full. I'm asuming it's doing this because there is someithing partially blocking the filler hose in my truck. Does anyone know if there is a screen to stop stuff from going into your fuel tank? Is it tough to remove the filler hose from the truck to clear out the obstruction? Any ideas? thanks.

There is what's called a roll over ball in the tube, keeps the fuel in when you're upside down. It's restrictive enough to block a siphon hose from entering the tank. Remove the fill hose to pop the ball out and you'll be able to fill up much faster and get a ball for your dog at the same time.

 

Didn't you warn me about filling up too fast damaging the fuel level sender?

 

It wasn't me but I've heard this.
Personally I don't see how it's possible since the sender is inside the module and should be protected rather well.
Dodge says filling up past the second automatic nozzle shutoff is a no-no.

It's real easy. Just remove the tube, there is a retainer that is just pushed in on both sides of the ball. Use needle nose pliers to pull one or both retainers out.

If you continue to have problems, I MAY be able to help. I've got a '98.5 24v CTD RAM that's been through lots of fuel delivery issues and mod's [which includes fairly extensive tank and fuel pickup work]. Hell, I've even put my own spin on the fuel level sender modification.

In short, I've been FORCED into about every conceivable fuel issue possible--let's hope anyway If you continue to have fuel-related issues, I be happy to give it some thought.

I had the ball fall into the tank somehow and I went through 2 sending units thinking it was bad. Turns out the anti syphon ball was causing the sending unit to hang up. This was not one of Dodges better ideas.
