okay guys here is the question(s)
veh : 98 dodge 24v ctd

buddys wife driving down the road and it quit no coughs no nuthin very low on fuel, mechanic it was taken to says xfer pump and injector pump are shot.
If fuel xfer pump goes how often does it butrn injector pump up ?
How can he tell if injector pump is bad when no fuel from xfer pump?

aftermarket better to replace than OEM price differences and lastly is this something we can do (yes we have mechanical ability) or better left to professionals??????

The truck's injector pump is cooled and lubed by diesel fuel. When the lift pump fails to provided an adequate amount of fuel the injector pump will fail. This is a common failure and why concerned 24 valvers install a fuel pressure gauge to keep up with the lift/transfer pump's health.

I would suggest waiting on the injectors until after the lift pump and injector pump issues are settled.

 

Dalton is absolutely right without a fuel pressure gauge in a 24 valve cummins your gambling thousands daily unless under warranty. Lift pumps are known to die at any given time.

Most of the time these trucks dont just quit while driving because the VP does pull some fuel just not enough to feed the engine and cool it. So if the lift pump quits and the VP is still pulling fuel the truck will still run but it usually doesnt have the ability to restart the truck.

 

I was driving down I-87 in new york and as i slowed down for the toll booth the truck just died. No warning other than the fuel pressure guage had been reading "odd" for a few days. in my case the the xfer pump was fine but the pumps do go . imo your better off with an aftermarket pump espically if you plan on doing BOMB'S but, thats just my .02
