Front axle rebuild

I took my truck into the shop because it was making some whining noise in 4-hi. They took a hold of front drive shaft and moved it. The movement was in the front diff. They said one of the bearing was bad and I would need a rebuild. They said that they haven't had any luck with just replacing the bearings and they usually send it to a shop to be fixed. They called for a quote on a Dana 70 and it was $800-1400 depending on how much they had to do. They go through the whole axle and there is a guarantee when done. The price doesn't include taking the axle out or putting it back in.

I was just wondering what my options are. I really don't want to be throwing my money away but I don't know much about gears and such. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

That's a fair enough price range for what they might have to do, but there's no reason the front axle needs to be removed to perform the work.

They take the axle out so that it can be taken to a company called Weller's. That is all they do, axles.
