First gen tranny trouble
First gen tranny trouble
I've got a 93 cummins with a suncoast auto tranny. Truck was driven almost daily up until november, then i parked it inside until yesterday. Truck ran and shifted fine all day then overdrive started acting up,like you had to feather the gas to get it to shift. Drove it home and it sat overnite.Left in it today same problem with drive and over drive, didnt want to shift into at all.First and second shifted real quick.Ran into the store, came back out to leave and reverse engages but only backed up about 3 inches, like slipping a clutch. Finally got it pushed out and drove it home, same problem with overdrive. Just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas of what it could be or possible fix. This is about the 3rd tranny from suncoast and the 2nd time being serviced.I will never buy a suncoast again.
Thanks

Yep, front clutch probablly toasted. You should have a good ideal of what a complete O'H cost after three previous encounters. My estimate if for $2,867.76 including sales tax and recappable tires for extra.
So it needs completely rebuilt now? I know it costs at least $500 to have the tranny pulled and reinstalled. Is the torque converter and valve body going to have to be replaced to? I checked the fluid and it is not metallic or burnt.
Converter and valve body are fine.
At a minimum the front clutch needs to be redone. Your trans guy is going to have to figure out why it got toasted or it will happen again. Might be as simple as a damaged seal during the last rebuild or an improperly adjusted TV cable, but he has to find the cause and correct it.

ok guys i went out and fired up the truck and put it in reverse.I let it warm up and tried reverse,it hesitated at first then engaged and reverse worked.Took it up and down the driveway forward to reverse about 10 times. reverse occasionally slipped or shuttered but had enough torque to break the tires loose in reverse. Is it possible the everse band just needs tightened? haven't taken it down the road yet to see how drive and overdrive shift yet. Just trying to see if it is something else other than needing overhauled. It doesn't have alot of miles on it,6,ooo at the most.Im not a tranny expert at all, just confused to why it operated perfect then after being parked screwed up.Thanks

have you checked the fluid level?
Low/Reverse band has nothing to do with front clutch.
Front clutch is responsible for reverse, direct and OD gears being accomplished after shift.

ya fluid level is fine,Reverse acted similar once before and i took it to the shop.If i recall seemed like the overdrive was messed up too. I found the receipt for the work they did and it says adjust band and shift points. But i cant remember if they had to replace clutches or not.
