engine missing and little white smoke, took tst box off and went to knocking?
Hello, I am a newbe here, I put a tst box on my 03 dodge 4x4 diesel dually automatic. It had around 24000 miles on it. When it reached 52000 miles it went to missing and a little white smoking. I took the box off and when I started it , it was knocking loud so I shut it off and called the dodge dealership. They started it and cut it off quick and said that it was knocking and they then did a oil anlyis on it and said that the motor was no good and needed another. But the dodge rep would not fix it , so after 12 wks and a lawyer . I went a paid the bill at the dodge dealership (465.93) . And paid another wrecker company to bring it home. I told them that they needed to have checked the injectors , that I was told that the piston would hold about 6 oz of diesel and that it would knock with all that on the piston? They did nothing . I quess I teaded them off . I'm thinking of puting new oil and filter and the box back on it and start it up to see if it still knocks with the box back on it. I was told when taking a box off that the motor would retard the time or something like that and it would know. I really need some advice here on this Thank
Well, first of all, WELCOME!!! Second, did the dealer know that you had the box on? If so, that would be the reason for the voided warranty. If not, why did they refuse to fix it? Have you had an analysis done somewhere else? I sure would be looking at a second opinion. Do you have any guages on your truck? Kinda sounds like you got the EGT a little to high. Good luck and keep us informed.

no box, no guages, They asked for oil change reciepts, I got them for them, I told them that a stick had stuck up threw the bottom and knocked off a line to the turbo, we cut the truck off and could not get the clamp back on so we put a regular clamp on it . (it was the waste gate line). So the rep just won't fix it. The dodge dealer ship said we had steps to go threw in order to get the rep to fix it. 1 was oil change reciepts, 2. Take the oil and have it anylized , 3. Take the oil pan off 4. never learned the rest . So I went and got my truck
sounds to me that the reason they denied your warranty is because of motor mods. if you had the line off the turbo to create more boost if caught they will deny your warranty. seems to me there is more to this than you are telling us. you had a lawyer in you first post so what is his opinion on this? they also had the oil analyzed what was the outcome of that? removing the tst is not going to cause a motor to rap or knock. like i said i believe there is more to the story.
well I sure did not tell them their was a box on it. I left no evidence of the box except the clamp on the waste gate line. I quess they all know that one of the procedures in having a box is , to take the line off and screw in another brass elbow and that would turn up the turbo. I can't explain it no better than the above. Just looking for some help, I'm not on trial here, Just going to be out of a lot of money. Thanks Can any one else help!
you still did not answer on what the lawyers opinion was and what the oil analyzed tests came back as? what are chryslers actual reasons for denial of warranty. no you are not on trial [lol] just that there are to many unanswered questions. i have 30 plus years of chrysler dealership experience that is why i am asking.
I told them to send a wrecker after the truck and it was knocking, couple days went buy, they said they had some steps to go threw in order for dodge to warranty it. While I was finding my oil receipts, (I told them that it would be hard that I had changed it at the shop.) That is at an automotive shop , I helped, the shop got my receipts together and probly 2 wks had passed and in mean while they had oil sent to lab and said that it was broke down , and it had copper , alluminum and iron and a lot of oxygen in it. Then they said they had to send it in to the rep and he would give answer. during this they said they had to take oil pan off and look at it, well I drove up and asked the mechanic what he saw , he said just metal deposits in the bottom of oil pan, I told him that he would probly see a clamp on a line to the turbo, and it had been replaced due to a stick went up in there and knocking the line off and my friend saw it when it happend and they fixed it right then. THey could not get the orginal clamp back on so they put a regular clamp on . We all thought nothing about it. The machanic said cool it worked and I won't tell them . If you tell them that I know i will get fired, I told him ok. THey hee hawed around for 10 or ll more wks . Probly on the 4 or 5 wk I got a lawyer (lady) she called and talked to them and she sent them the oil change receipts copys and nothing happened. Some where around the 10 or 11 wk she said they said that I told the mechanic not to tell about the line and that I said it poured oil out of it. He was lie ing about that, I got the owner on the supervisor and he got mad about it, and nothing got done. Lawyer sent a letter to the dealer ship for the rep to read that said that I helped with oil change at shop and I did not tell the mechanic like he said . I told her like i said above . But I think if there is any way to patch it , im going to trade it in in a couple of wks. on something different. But I don't think that i will be happy with another brand, but the warranty sucks with dodge, heck it had several recalls, they don't ecknowledge that . That might have helped out on break down? who knows , shute i found a motor 03 with 6k miles on it with auto trans but mine is 4x4, both for 5500. or take off 750 and he'll keep trans. but i think I could get more than 750 for transmission . I hope to figure this out by wed. That is when dodge dealership will have my oil pan bolts in that they lost. Thanks

Welcome to the world of self insurance! When you add to these trucks before warranty is up you run the risk of losing your warranty as nitro stated. I for one cannot blame them as Chrysler warrants a stock truck and you opted out of thier agreement. Hope you understand this issue? And hopefully your truck might have other simple issues that caused this and you can get it running again. Goodluck,,,Rick
so what does the lawyer say. they have to prove you jacked up the motor. just because there is a clamp on there would not cause denial. if you took them to court they would have to prove that you bombed it and modified the boost. what did the dealer or rep say to you? did they accuse you of modifications? or do they KNOW you made mods that would void the warranty? if someone in the dealer knows your truck and you they may of steped in and made that claim to the dealer and rep. if that is the case he would have to make these claims in court. if this is true i can see the denial and you might be fighting a loosing battle. the oil sample may also have indicators of the type of mods you had made. for them to deny warranty i would think they have a fair ammount of ammo. when you bomb these trucks you can expect the possibility of warranty denial.
for what its worth ford and gm work the same way. you may think the dodge/ cummins warranty suck but the others suck just as bad in a case such as yours. cummins is the one that has to pay the chrysler warranty claims. they have sent written orders that dealers can be charged back if cummins feels there is any abuse.
i have seen some pretty good deals on used motors at e-bay.

that is the deal on the motor on ebay 5500.
Lawyer lady didn't call me back all I get out of her is her secretary.
They have no prove what so ever. of the mod.
The dealers shop supervisor said that the rep said he was threw.
No they did not say any thing towards mod. so the lawyer said, because a line came off and oil poored out of it, that was a lie I told them that the line got yanked off by a stick pulling off the road and a partner of mine said stop a limb just went in their from bottom. And they couldn't get the orginal clamp on and they put on a regular one. Other than that the oil change might have made the rep ? because i said that i changed the oil and had to find my reciepts. When I got them and turned them in to lawyer did not hear from them for wks. No one up their new my truck , it stayed way out their in the back in parkin lot with other new vehicles . I'm baffled at the situation. But I just can't figure out why it went to knocking after i took off the TST box. Because it was running fine (no knocking) just little miss, with a little white smoke coming out tailpipe. SO I took off box and started the engine up and cut it off because it was now knocking. Just got to figure this out. Somebody told me that the box altered the timeing and when i took it off to make it back stock it did not let the timeing go back. so it knocked. Another told me that a bad injecter will make a knock because The piston will hold 6 oz of diesel in it and when it tries to compress it will not properly and make a loud knock. Thanks for helping me , because at first it liked to have killed me when it broke because I LOVE MY DODGE TRUCK IT WAS ALSOME! Talking about stressed out then I over come it . Now just going to figure it out.

if it was a boost line no oil should come out. are you sure that is was not an oil line.? if in fact you have actually changed oil and have proof i would do this.
go to the dealership. talk to the owner explain the situation. if he backs the service department up tell him you would like to get in writing the reason for warranty denial. secondly i would get a hold of the service rep and request the same. if they are denying you warranty they should do this. if they ask why tell them that you are sueing chrysler not the dealer in court. if the rep asks you tell him the same. i would be on the phone and calling customer relations untill they give you the reasons in writing. they wont want to do it because their claims against you and your truck will be what they will have to prove in court. if you push it hard enough and they know you mean buisness they might give in. the lawyer you have sounds like a bum. if you want to pm me we can talk privately on this or i can give you my number so you can call me. but as i said you have to be on the up and up and not giving us a bs job as to what has happened. if you feel you have abused it or did something that hurt it you might be asking for something you dont deserve. if they pulled the pan it must be a crank and bearing problem which is unheard of. that is maybe why they are blameing lack of oil changes or if it was a oil line that caused a loss of oil. i would go to a cummins dealer and get an estimate of repairs and use thoes numbers as well as threatening loss of a vehicle as a dollar amount of your lawsuit.

Im positive that it was not an oil line. Took it off my self and put the brass elbo in my self . it has something to do with waste gate . Because the one that i took out look just like the one i put in except for the inside hole.
But every thing that I have wrote is true. Heck I even talked to another dodge dealership that is more busness and more professional looking. The lady their told me that if I got my reciepts for my oil changes that she don't see no reason why they shouldn't fix. it. Even to the Clamp she said that that shouldn't have nothing to do with the motor knocking. But most likely the rep for them will be the same rep. I think im going to put the stuff back to see if it is just an injector problem and go from their. I will tell them that I put fresh oil and filter and the bolts back in the oil pan to get a second opinion on the sutuation, because in my heart I think that it is a injector. And the dodge place that I was at was sold within the past yr and the new owner got on to the service mangager for not responding to my messages, and phone calls, Then when I got a lawyer they won't even talk to me on the mater. So A bad position to be in, I quess if still knocking I could try and fix the problem and trade it in. Shute they want 9653 dollars for a long block and 5600 for a short block . Plus over 1500 to put it in. That would be cool to talk to someone who knows about how to deal with them. I feel better just having my truck in the yard looking at it. LOL wish it was running great though!
You ever here of John Author Eaves law firm ? That is who im thinking of talking to about this. The lawyer that I had sent a bill a wk before i went and got my truck Friday . For 367 , just for writing a coulple of letters and talking on the phone with someone a couple of times. I don't know what to do about her but I wouldn't feel right paying that unless they get me some progress. But they have not did nothing to make them sweat, the only thing that they are doing is trying to comprimise with them. I quess dodge payed my lawyer off. or took her to lunch or dinner. Thanks
