Engine knock
Engine knock
I have a 2001 Dodge with a 5.9 24 v Cummins with approx 89,000 miles. I have never had any problems prior to this. The engine suddenly developed a loud engine knock. I removed the oil pan and checked the main and rod bearings and found no signs of any bearing problems, there is some small bearing like debris and what appears to be bearing babbit (gold in color) in the oil and oil pan. Any ideas where the debris came from and what could possibly be causing the knocking noise ? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I would start with an oil analysis. hope you kept some of your oil (have the filter checked as well.) If you noticed it this much it's possible that you have a 53 block (do a search on this) that may have cracked in such a manner as to create a loss of compression.
Did you purchase it secondhand? Perhaps someone missed some oil changes - but I wouldn't think that would do it...sorry about this, but welcome to DTR!

"approx 89,000 miles" then "I removed the oil pan"
So much for your 100,000 mile warranty. That's where I would have started, unless it's been bombed beyond the point of no return. Seems these days, just a clean spot on the fuse block cover that appears to be where velcro was pulled off is enough to void it.

I would check pistons, if you use aftermarket oil filters I've seen them come a part and plug oil spray nozzles causing excessive wear and scooring of cylinder walls.
