early 98 light switch help
early 98 light switch help
The light switch pulled out on my bros 98 the other day and when we put it back all his dash lights and tails were gone. I told him to get a new switch, and we just got done installing it. WE STILL HAVE NO TAILS OR DASH!! If we pull it out slow, I can get them to come on but the drop as soon as soon as you pull out the switch.
Is there some trick to get this in the right place?? Could the pull button be broken? Could I have gotten a 2nd bad switch?? I am really puzzled here and we are heading out this afternoon
Help me please
Chris

OK, some more info. I took the switch over to my wifes Durango and the switch works fine in the D. SO what could possibly be going on??? Could there be a relay gone bad that I can't find??
Please, some one come up with something, he is leaving on vacation tomorow and he needs his truck running

I'd take a circuit checker (multimeter with a beep) to it and check the switch first, then the wiring to the switch. Could you have pulled something loose under the dash when the first switch pulled out?

Ok I'm going to try again. Replaced the headlight switch again and still nothing. The running lights come on as I pull the switch but then go out as soon as the switch is out. I tried to follow the wiring harness looking for a broken ground but Missouri is in the middle of one of the worst ice storms in recent memory so it is hard to work on the truck. I've been looking for a wiring diagram but have had no luck, so I am still looking for ideas. I have been using a multi-meter to try and figure out which terminals need to have power to turn the lights on but no luck thus far. Here is a picture of the switch. Maybe someone can tell me what terminals need to have power for the running lights to be on.
Thanks, Kyle.
Thanks, Kyle.
Man, what a pain! Gotta get a wiring diagram! Perhaps even a haynes manual has one. Sorry I am not closer to MO, would love to try to help... we are having some nice -18F weather here too, so some of my work on the truck has been postponed for a while...

Kyle, I've got the factory service manual for your truck at the shop, but we had the ice storm down here too, so I probably won't get there 'til Wednesday.
If you still need color codes or pin-out info after tomorrow, let me know and I'll look it up for ya.
p.s. I hate working on these trucks when it's cold, too!

Well, you guys are not gonna believe this!!! I got my brothers truck going again! After beating my head against the wall over and over, I started over and started checking relays and fuses. Guess what?? The tail light fuse in the compartment inside the truck was blown and I could not tell!
I feel like such a big politically correct dummy!!! IT was a simple fuse all along!
kbailey, just replace that fuse and see if that helps. Like I said, it didn't look blown
OK, fixed it for you

I had the same thing, I didnt close my gate all the way last winter, it came off crossing some speed bumps, pulled the wires out of the tail gate lights, blew the fuse. I drove home on the expressway with people beeping at me the whole way at 8 at night.
In the morning i swapped the switch, nothing, then found the tail light fuse shot.
Now i look for the simple solutions first and rule things out from there.
