hey guys, ive got a 1990 12v that has about 300k on it and has been the best truck i have ever owned. No major problems since ive had it however i am suddenlly getting fuel in my crankcase. i have changed the lift pump and thats not it. any ideas where to go next ? injectors maybe ? if so can i rebuild these myself ? any info would be greatly appreciated.probably getting about 3 quarts of fuel after around 300 miles driving. thx bunches

I think the most likely place is the shaft seal on the front of the injector pump, although I have never seen a VE pump do that. At that mileage, I'm sure it's possible. I don't know if you will be able to confirm it without removing the pump or the gear cover.

If the truck isn't running rough (I know, hard to tell with these "real" diesels),
then it most likely isn't an injector stuck open, unless it's intermittent enough that it's hard to notice.

That'd be the cheaper problem though, other possibility is some majorly scored cylinders.
But that would also result in rough running, and loss of power.

sounds like the injection pump , if you had scored cylinders or injector leakage , you would have been complaining about smoke and running rough.

several years ago i had a 90 in the shop with the same problem. it turned out to be the injection pump shaft seal that was leaking. we just removed the pump and replaced the seal. this was pushing a lot of fuel into the crankcase.

I'm certainly not a 12V expert, but there was an article in the companion magazine from a competing website last month that described the same symptoms. After rebuilding the injection pump and changing injectors, the writer found that a diaphragm was cracked in the fuel transfer pump which allowed fuel into the crankcase. If it were me, I'd check the cheap stuff first!

Since he has already replaced the transfer pump my next step would be a pulling the injectors and having them checked. If they are ok time for a compression check.

hey guys, thanks a bunch for the feedback its all good. the truck has never idled for extensive periods. I have noticed that it is idleing a little rough and is blowing some light colored smoke that seems worse if it has been idleing and then i take off in it. I really hate to get rid of this truck it has been unlike any other i have owned so i plan on really trying to get her back on her feet if it doesnt break me. do theses symptoms sound more like the injectors ? thx again, C.L. If it lets off a bigger cloud of white smoke after sitting overnight than it used to the problem is probably an injector(s)
If I bring them in my local John Deere dealer will check them for free.
