This TSB deals with the lift pump.

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2003/14-002-03.htm

Print this out and show it to the service writer. That should make them get off thier butts. That TSB only deals with diagnosing the bad lift pump. I am still looking for the one that deals with the replaceing the lift pump with the in tank pump. More to follow...

Found it. The in tank pump does not have a TSB or recall on it. Rather a "tech tip".

The only thing that Dodge put out is a tech tip related to the fuel pressure testing on the new pumps. It reads as follows:

Tech Tip Part Description: In-Tank Fuel Pump Kit(s), In-Tank Fuel Pump

Tech Tip Description: When troubleshooting an In-Tank Fuel Transfer Pump installed on a 1998.5 - 2004 Diesel Ram, be sure to use the 2005 model year diagnostic manual. Fuel pump flow, NOT PRESSURE is the indicator of a good or bad fuel pump. All aftermarket devices used to identify low fuel pressure are incompatible with the In-Tank Transfer Pump and should be disregarded.

Secondly the difference in cost between the in tank and the old lp is litteraly $342.00 for the old one and $380.00 for the in tank. My math doesn't come up to $200.00 but $38.00 instead. Third thing is that on that job we only charge 2.5-3.0 hours to do it which @ $78.00/hr is still only just over $600.00. Sounds like the dealer is making way to much on the job and just doesn't want dc to cover it.

travist, by your wording i assume you are a mechanic at a dodge dealer? you are telling me that it is covered and j body is telling me it is covered then why cant the service adviser or service manager at this dealership get it covered? i called dc and talked to 2 different customer service reps. the first one pawned me off on the second. the second one told me that the lift pump is no longer covered. so i dont get it? how can you guys get it covered and dick scott dodge cannot get it covered even after i called dc? something is not right!

thanks for any help i can get guys. i will make sure to let everyone know what happens.

btw, my truck was sitting in their lot this afternoon at 3pm. not looking good for dick scott dodge. lol....

Jump on www.dodge.com and enter your issue, your truck VIN, and request their intervention.

Now, sometimes they will go for the in-tank pump and sometimes not. The situation is that the latest and greatest still defective upgraded lift pump is what their warranty will cover with no questions.

The in-tank pump was developed when all the guys with the third gen trucks started dumping megathousand dollar pumps and injectors. So, it is actually a fix for that series and not originally intended for the earlier versions.

Good luck with your request.

OUTDOORSMAN,

print out the TSB I linked earlier and show it to the service writer. That will correct them and if they still refuse to cover you, then find another dealer. If you don't have a printer then write down the TSB # and have them look that up.

I hate it when a knucklehead that has no clue is working as a service writer. Even when DC says they WILL warranty the lift pumps.

Now you all got me wondering, I went to get mine fixed, and they said it was out of warranty. I was under the 100K but over the 5 yrs in service. Would it still have been replaced? I bought the in tank pump my self and put in it.

I believe the five year limit bit you. The warranty does say 5YR/100k Miles.

OUTDOORSMAN, I work in the parts department at a dodge dealer. I cannot answer for that dealership but by the looks of your truck info I can see no reason for it not to be covered. It appears your under in mileage and in time as well so I see no reason to turn it down. I would maybe try taking it to another dealer.

if you have any advice for me please post it here or pm me. thanks, Darrin
Dealer in Richmond, mi R&Red with in-tank, mine no problem. Total hack job though. Don't use them, IMHO.

IT IS COVERED under the 100k/5 year warranty. Period!
Are you out of warranty?

Caveat? The in-tank isn't much better, and a pain if it goes out.

1: get a warranty denial in writing
2: Have it towed ANYWHERE to R&R the lift pump with a $125 cummins part.
3: take to another dealer to R&R the VP under warranty.
4: sue the dealer in small claims, .

do i have any recourse here? what should i do.

the dealer said i have a problem with the injection pump and they cannot do anything with it till the lp is replaced. for the $926 deal i was going to do it myself but for $200 i told them i am still unhappy that i am not getting a real warranty but to do the job.

if you have any advice for me please post it here or pm me. thanks, Darrin
If it were me, I have them warrenty the old style pump and have them get the IP problem fixed. According to your year truck your 5 years is almost over depending on your inservice date.

my hubbie's went too, his is in kilometers which we knew but the dealership didnt so they said we were out of warranty, so we told them it was in kilometers, they said then that it was out of warranty because it was actually purchased in 2000, so the 5 year warranty had expired. go figure!

are these elect lift pumps that much of a problem ? have always liked the easy horsepower increase but at what cost compared to 12v? Not meant to offend just a question
