DEAD Transfer Case!
DEAD Transfer Case!
I Was in Mississippi a week before Chrismas and my transfer case died. I was pulling out of the plant I was working at and POP! something snapped! I had to drive it until i had a friend bring a flatbed to get it. Under acceleration it sounded like a bearing going bad. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this? My truck only has 84K on it... The mechanic said this was about the 5th truck he had seen do this. Is this a problem???? I know it is for me! ($1400!)

Michael
Re:DEAD Transfer Case!
sounds a little bit familar to the t-case in my jeep that snapped its chain (i know the dodge has the np241hd and the jeep has the 231 but they do share similar designs).

Re:DEAD Transfer Case!
Common 241 problem. Sounds like broken rear snapring at bearing. When this happens your t-case tries to partially engage 4-Hi synchro under load. Will destroy the synchro/sleeve assembly eventually. Another guy recently posted same problem "Grinding under load", in this section. Broke 4 snaprings in mine before t-case grenaded. Rebuilt mine w/a JB Conversions slip yoke eliminator kit, solving the problem permanently.
fwiw - chain isn't used except in 4wd.
Only my .02,
Good luck,
-Scott
