Dash lights

Jumped in the truck to go to the store and when I turned on my lights the dash lights went out??? gauges all work all other lights worked. So I went to the store and on the way the check light came on, lost all power, turned around and headed for home and it was like someone turned on a switch all power was back, but light was still on. Made it home and checked the fuse, the allumination fuse was blown, so I put another one in and it blew it to. Can Anyone help and point me where to start looking for the problem.

If no ones been into the dash and caused the problum ?
I would suspect the head lite switch , the winding for the dimer could have warn or broken and the power side touching ground .

If the check engine light is on there should be a computer code that could help you diagnose the problem. Does anyone know how to retrieve codes off this truck? I've got a '98 also and would like to know how to look at the computer if i need to.

Dimmer switch was the problem. You need to have a scanner plug in to get the codes.. My edge box went south, thats why light came on.. I called edge and they said send it in and they would fix it. Pluged the stock wireing back in and cleared codes and it has'nt been on sence.

Thanks for the help...
