Dana 70 Shot

I just got back from the dealer where I had a tranny service including filter and band adjustment, power steering flush and a rear diff fluid change.

They called me as soon as they opened the diff and said it was totally hosed inside. The truck has been running with no obvious problems. I have heard a whine from the diff when it is 10 degrees or below.

Here is the parts list they gave me and pricing

DISC KIT #4506072 $167
Gear Kit #4638255 $825
2 Dif BRG #4746605 $148
PIN BRG #4746604 $80.50
PIN BRG #4746617 $106
P Seal #5012846AB $22.25
SHim Kit #4746982AB $31.70
They also have a note "carrier bearings gone" and "Posi-burned up"
They said they weren't sure if it needed the gear kit, I am assuming this is the ring and pinion gears?

I have rebuilt engines and installed a shift improver in the valve body of my 46RE for my other truck. This should be a fairly straight forward job to do myself shouldn't it?

Any tips on parts?

Just when I was going to spring for a DTT tranny too!!

Thanks

Ouch! I just opened my diff up for the first time. Pretty nasty in there. I am going to make that an annual to do from now on. Good Luck. Can you pull from a wreck for less?

Chasd60 how many miles on your truck? Do you tow with it? I have a 2001.5 & use it strickly for towing. Took my diff. cover off a couple of weeks ago to change fluid & put on a mag-tec cover. Everthing looked good in there.

I just bought the truck about a month or so ago. It was on Ebay and I don't think the guy knew because he got it at auction and it had no real symptoms. I picked it up for $10,800 so it was a good deal.

I have 120,000 miles on it now (put 2500 on since I bought it)
I plan to primarily use it for towing, I have a 4500lb Travel Trailer and may upgrade to a heavier one in the future. If I use it like I did my gasser it will be parked from October until April.

Haven't had too much luck finding a wreck yet.

Rebuilding a differential is very straightforward, and it should only take two to four hours for an average guy with normal shop tools to complete. The special tools can be rented at any tool rental place for a few bucks.

Go to http://www.randysringandpinion.com/ and you will find all the parts you need, and can even get the R&R manual from them.

Looking at the parts list provided you by the *******, I would expect to pay about half, and get twice the quality from Randy's. Go to their site and read the technical assistance tips and that will help you determine if it is something you are willing to tackle.

Man you did get a deal if you only paid $10,800 for it. I thought about selling mine off for a dually & It was $23,500 to a private party. Decided against it for now, got to much invested in it.

Good luck in your diff. rebuild, let us know how it went.

Yeah, check out Randy's ring and pinion. They are great people to deal with and very helpful. Definitely a lot cheaper to do aftermarket bearings and parts.

I got ring, pinion, carrier and pinion bearings, carrier and pinion preload shims and seals, all DANA stuff from a local drivetrain place here in binghamton for about 360 bucks. This was for a dana 70 w3.54's. Setting up gears (especially big heavy ones) is not for the faint of heart. One needs to be able to accurately read the tooth pattern and adjust shims appropriately---which can involve pressing the carrier bearings on and off several times. I had to huff my carrier out and in seven times berfore the gear pattern was acceptable. With the detroit locker and no case spreader, lets just say my 160 pound frame was BEAT when it was done. Fortunately, I'm still young and dumb or so it didn't hurt that bad Good luck with your repair!

OK, I ordered everything from Randys Ring and Pinion except for the axle seals which I can get at NAPA for $11 each, need two.

The total on the parts was $603.26 which is a savings of $777.19 from the dealers prices and I think I got more than the dealer listed. I got everything internal including the rebuild kit with clutches for my Power-Lok posi trac.

It may not need everything changed but everything in there has 120,000 miles on it and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

In addition to that I ordered a mag base dial indicator and an inch/lb torque wrench. I always needed the torque wrench for tranny band adjustments anyway.

I think after I get this installed I'll look into the DTT tranny.

Way to go--always pays to ask and shop around and there's nothing like doing it once and doing it right for peace of mind.

What generally goes bad is the drivers side carrier bearing. How could they know about the disks unless the took it apart? Depends on what you want. If it is quiet the ring and pinion is probably ok. Pull the carrier out and spin the pinion, see if it is smoothe and if the seal leaks. If not, just get carrier bearings pressed on and put it back together. Check the gear mesh and most likely it will be fine. The one carrier bearing goes from the torque against it and causes the wine. Fill it with synthetic, 140 if you are towing.
