D.O.A. Fuel Pump???
I was just about to leave town on a long trip and my 2001 truck died
From what I can tell I believe it to be the transfer pump. I had it towed to a local garage that claimed their "diesel guy" could fix it. The next day he tells me that he thinks there is a pump in the tank that is not working. I had recently replaced both the injector pump and the transfer pump that is mounted on the engine. Could there be a third in the tank? Is there any easy way to tell?
Thank you!!!

Rough way to have a first post.
Welcome to the site.
If you have a pump on the side of the block, you shouldn't have one in the tank.
Have them check the fuel pressure at the feed line to the injector pump.

If you had a dealer recently replace the LP & IP, they probably replaced your engine-mounted pump with the new style in-tank pump.
So far, the "diesel guy" isn't exactly a confidence booster...

Well, the "diesel guy" replaced the lift pump and there is still no action. I'm now wondering if the fuel guage is not working and I simply ran out of fuel? I'm having it towed home right now. I'm amazed how lousy some shops can be. This guy doesn't sound very sharp!
Okay... we got it running. IT WAS OUT OF FUEL!!!! I guess the fuel gauge circuit is not working properly. Maybe the sending unit? Anyhow... thank you very much for all your suggestions! The "diesel man" made away with about $300 from this deal. Crazy.........
not to be rude But I would make sure to get the lift pump they took off to replace, to keep as a spare since they jiped you on putting it in there you should at least get it as a spare.. no need leting them keep it. just my 2 cents

...and "1/4 tank syndrome" strikes again. I've had many tow in's over the years that were out of fuel, but the gauge shows 1/8 to a 1/4 tank. Hindsite is 20/20. Pretty easy to diag once the problem has shown itself. Sure the guy "assumed" the fuel gauge was accurate. Pretty much a dodge thing.
I am topping off my tank TODAY, then! With my luck, I will run out in the middle or a busiest intersection in town... had that happen once on a 1972 Opel Manta that suffered the 1/4 tank syndrom once, that was really embarassing

When I worked for Dodge, I must of put 3 sending units on one guys brand new truck, I kind of wonder what he was thinking after the first couple.
I know I was getting tired of pulling the tank off every couple days to replace another one.
