Question Crankshaft rear seal

I just removed the rear crank seal with an O ring hook as it was just floating on the shaft. The new seal has a wear sleeve in it and a rubber ring on the outside of it. This is from Cummins so I am assumeing this is a standard replacement part. Has anyone else run into this? The old seal has been spining in the mount as there are scrub lines on the outside of the seal.

I changed the rear main on my 92 a couple years ago and that's what I bought, the one with the sleeve. You can get one without the sleeve also. My local cummins shop sold me a seal/sleeve installation tool which worked great, and told me if I returned it in a couple days they would refund the money for it which they did---I thought that was GREAT customer service. As for your seal spinning, that don't sound good-keep us posted.

You should get a new main seal adapter, it sounds like yours is toast. It's more work to change it, but less work than slapping in a new seal only to have to pull it all apart again.

The seal adapter is the housing the seal is pressed into. It bolts to the back of the block. You did say it looked like the seal had spun in the bore, right?

The seal adapter is further in than that. The transmission adapter will have to come off to replace the seal adapter if that is damaged.

Well I got lucky the seal adaptor didn't have any gruves in it but the seal had rotated some as there was no paint on the outside of it.The new seal has a rubber outer band on it so it fit snug. I checked the cam plug and it is set about 1/16 into the block so I didn't touch it.Everything is back together and not leaking so I am optimistic. Thanks all, Al
